The sun beat down from overhead with this kind of intensity I was breaking out in a sweat whilst sitting in the colour. I used ton’t mind the heat so much, I was simply glad to be outside. But it did impede the speed of our progress at the construction site. It had been grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, laying cubes, and bending rebar, all that I had little to no working experience in.

I’ll admit that construction houses was perhaps not in my own job description. When I sat there with my back against a shrub I pumped a half jar of water over my mind. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt much joyful, however because I was truly satisfied. I welcomed a gentle breeze which unexpectedly drifted round the landscape and required my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how can I get here?

Are not there something more your than regular and monotony? Occasionally I’d often wonder if most people were really waking up in the morning inspired by the work they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I needed a change. I needed to become consciously involved with something positive that will give me a sense of purpose. Does that exist, and if yes where can I sign up? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Yet, I finally took the initiative and began to see this fantasy when I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really change the world? I desired to find out.

Habitat only started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and I had been the 1st to experience the app. I felt that this was an enormous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the support of volunteers. Starting out I had been a bit on edge, but in the time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was incredible – that I was actually enjoying off ice job. I participate in the evolution of materials such as a volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I caused a taskforce for its continuous advancement of this IVP program. I even administered an onsite volunteer training regime at El Salvador. Yet the greatest part in my job was having to work along with other volunteers, people who weren’t because that they had to be but have there been simply because they wanted to be.

So far as the volunteers have been concerned my role was to coordinate home and coming logistics, then administer orientations, and encourage them throughout their stay. There is this kind of charisma amongst the volunteers I’d go on it a step further and plan weekend trips and after-work outings. We finished up not just changing the lifestyles of others, but shifting the lives of eachother. Working with Habitat gave me the confidence to feel I could accomplish almost any endeavor, but more importantly it gave me a genuine sense of pride in being able to perform hard at work worth doing.

Normally as I could I’d break away from the office and accept volunteers build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see firsthand the culmination of one’s work. Out at the sight we would work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The scene was a great amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. The common bond that tied us together wasn’t that the very simple notion of developing a home. Only seeing everybody working, laughing, smiling, and discussing created a feeling therefore rich with emotion that it made me rethink the way I defined riches. Your house was symbolic greater than just a place of residence. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry together to the rest of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was authentic. We were not just building houses, but we were building lives.

Internationally or domestically, conflict resolution or individual rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to think that there are so many ways to get involved and give back to the global community. It isn’t important where you begin to begin making positive contributions equally as long as you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this is one of the toughest decisions to produce. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eradicate poverty housing? Not really close. Can I succeed? Absolutely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I alone cannot eliminate poverty housing, that led me to the answer I was looking for. Perhaps one man can’t change the world, however, the entire world can definitely change for one person. And it has this domino effect, which should spread throughout the globe we can, together, achieve the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the warmth of humanity instead of its indifference.
