building a house like a castle – For Sale: A House Built Like A Castle
I didn’t mind the heat, I was only glad to be out. But, it did impede the speed of the progress at the construction website. It was grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, laying blocks, and bending rebar, most that I had little to no working knowledge in.
I will acknowledge that construction houses was perhaps not in my own job description. When I sat there with my back against a shrub I squeezed a half jar of cool water over my head. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt refreshed, but because I had been truly happy. I recognized a gentle breeze which suddenly swept across the landscape and took my thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how did I arrive here?
Are not there something more alive than routine and monotony? At times I would often wonder if most people were really waking at the morning inspired by the work they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I needed to become consciously involved in something positive that would give me a sense of purpose. Does that also exist, and if yes where do I sign up? However, I finally chose and began to realize this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really change the whole world? I wanted to find out.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat simply started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and that I had been the very first to experience the application. I felt this is an enormous opportunity since the company was built and existed on the aid of volunteers. Beginning I had been somewhat on edge, in the time I found my groove within the Habitat frame. It was unbelievable – I was actually enjoying office work. I took part in the evolution of substances like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I caused a task force for its continuous advancement of this IVP program. I even administered an on site volunteer training plan in El Salvador. The greatest part about my job was to work alongside other volunteers, people who were there not because they had to be but were there only because they desired to become.
As far as the volunteers were concerned, my job was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them through the duration of their stay. There is this type of charisma amongst the volunteers I would simply take it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after work outings. We finished up not just changing the lives of many others, but changing the lifestyles of each other. Dealing with Habitat gave me the confidence to feel that I could accomplish almost any task, but more importantly it gave me a real sense of pride in being ready to perform hard at work worth doing.
As often as I could I would break away from the office and accept volunteers build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see firsthand the culmination of one’s work. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The scene was a amazing amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. The frequent bond which tied us together wasn’t that the simple notion of developing a home. Just watching everyone else working, laughing, grinning, and discussing created an atmosphere so rich with emotion that I made me reconsider the way I recognized riches. The home was symbolic of more than only a place of residence. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, and also an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry together to the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it had been authentic. We were not only building houses, but we were building lives.
Internationally or conflict settlement or human rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to think that there are many ways of getting involved and give back to the international community. However, these problems exist to not create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you begin to get started making positive contributions equally for as long as you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this is among the toughest decisions to produce. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I can’t eliminate poverty housing, that directed me to this answer I was looking for. Perhaps one person can not change the entire world, but the planet can certainly change for one individual. And it has this domino effect, that if spread throughout the globe we can, together, achieve the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the heat of mankind in the place of its own indifference.
