building a house like lego – Smart Bricks are full size, concrete Lego bricks designed
I used ton’t mind the heat so much, I was just happy to be out. Yet, it did slow the speed of our progress at the construction website. It was grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, laying cubes, and bending rebar, most which I had little to no working expertise in.
I will acknowledge that building houses was not in my job description. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt much refreshed, however because I had been truly content. I welcomed a gentle breeze that unexpectedly swept round the landscape and required my thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. How can I get here?
For many years that I had the fantasy of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing a different culture. Are not there something more alive than routine and monotony? Occasionally I would often wonder if a lot of people were really getting at the morning inspired by the job they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I had a change. I needed to eventually become actively engaged with something positive which could give me a feeling of purpose. Does that also exist, and if yes where do I subscribe? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. But, I finally took the initiative and started to realize this fantasy when I traveled to Costa Rica to a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really transform the world? I wanted to find out.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and activity. Habitat simply started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long-term volunteers and that I was the very first to experience the program. I felt this was an enormous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed on the aid of volunteers. Beginning I had been a bit on edge, in due time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying off ice job. I participate in the creation of substances such as a volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous advancement of this IVP program. I administered an on site volunteer training regime at El Salvador. Yet the best part in my job was to work alongside other volunteers, those who weren’t because they had to function but were there only because they wanted to become.
As far as the volunteers had been concerned, my role was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them throughout their stay. There is this type of charm amongst the volunteers I’d take it a step further and plan weekend trips and after work excursions. We ended up not just changing the lives of many others, however, shifting the lifestyles of each other.
Normally as I could I would break away from the workplace and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see first hand the culmination of your work. Out at the sight we would work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and appreciative of the help. The scene was a great amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the common bond which tied us together wasn’t that the simple thought of building a home. Just watching everyone else working, laughing, grinning, and discussing created a feeling therefore rich with emotion that I made me reconsider the way I recognized riches. The house was emblematic of more than only a place of residence. It represented a unity, a coming together, and an inherent comprehension of equality that we’ll carry with us for the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been authentic. We’re not only building homes, we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict settlement or individual rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to consider there are so many methods of getting involved and give back to the global community. But these problems exist not to create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you start to begin making positive contributions equally as long as you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this really is among the toughest decisions to create. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not really close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone cannot get rid of poverty housing, that led me to this answer I was searching for. Perhaps one man can’t change the world, however, the planet can certainly change for a single individual. And it has this domino effect, that should disperse across the planet we could, together, reach the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the heat of humankind in the place of its indifference.
