I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was just glad to be out. Yet, it did impede the rate of our progress at the construction site. It was grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, putting blocks, and bending rebar, all of that I had little to no working experience in.

I will acknowledge that construction houses was perhaps not in my own job description. A grin crossed my face, not because I felt more refreshed, however because I was truly satisfied. I welcomed a gentle breeze that suddenly drifted across the scene and took my thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. How did I arrive here?

Are not there something more alive than regular and monotony? Occasionally I’d often wonder if many people were really getting in the morning inspired by the job they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a change. I wanted to eventually become consciously engaged in something positive that will provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where do I register? Can one person really change the whole world? I desired to learn.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat only started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long term volunteers and I had been the 1st to go through the application. I felt that this is an enormous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed the support of volunteers. Getting started I was a bit on edge, but in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying off ice job. I participate in the evolution of materials such as a volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous improvement of the IVP program. I handled an on-site volunteer training regime in El Salvador. The greatest part in my job was having to work alongside other volunteers, people who were there not because they must function but were there only because they wished to be.

So far as the volunteers have been concerned my job was to coordinate home and coming logistics, then administer orientations, and support them through the duration of their stay. There is such a charm amongst the volunteers I’d often go on it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after-work outings. We ended up not simply changing the lives of many others, but shifting the lives of each other. Working with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I can accomplish virtually any endeavor, however more importantly it gave me a genuine sense of fulfillment in to be ready to work hard at work worth doing.

As often as I could I would break away from the workplace and take volunteers build trips to Habitat construction sights during Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of your work. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of our help. The scene was a fantastic amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. The common bond which tied us together was that the easy notion of developing a home. Just watching every one working, laughing, grinning, and discussing generated a feeling so rich with emotion it made me reconsider how I defined riches. Your home was symbolic greater than just a place of dwelling. It represented a unity, a coming together, along with an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry with us to the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was authentic. We’re not just building houses, but we were building lives.

Internationally or domestically, conflict settlement or individual rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to think that there are so many ways of getting involved and give back to the international community. It isn’t important where you begin to start making positive gifts just for as long as you make your decision to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this really is one of the toughest decisions to produce. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Not really close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I can’t get rid of poverty home, that directed me to this answer I was searching for. Perhaps one person can not change the world, but the entire world can certainly change for one individual. And it’s this domino effect, which if spread across the planet we could, collectively, achieve the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the warmth of humanity as an alternative of its indifference.
