The sun beat down from overhead with this kind of intensity I was breaking out in a sweat when sitting in the colour. I used ton’t mind the heat, I was simply glad to be outside. Yet, it did slow the rate of the progress at the construction website.

I will acknowledge that construction houses was perhaps not in my job description. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt much joyful, but because I had been truly satisfied. I recognized a gentle breeze that unexpectedly drifted round the scene and took my own thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. How did I get here?

For several years I had the fantasy of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing a different culture. Are not there something more alive than routine and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if a lot of people were really getting at the morning inspired by the job that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I had a change. I desired to become consciously engaged with something positive that could provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that even exist, and if yes where can I sign up? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Yet, I finally took the initiative and began to see this fantasy when I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really transform the world? I wanted to learn.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat just started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and I was the initial to experience the app. I believed that this is a tremendous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed the support of volunteers. Getting started I was a bit on edge, in due time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was incredible – that I was actually enjoying off ice job. I took part in the growth of substances like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous improvement of the IVP program. I even handled an onsite volunteer training regime in El Salvador. The greatest part in my job was to work alongside other volunteers, those who weren’t because they must be but have there been only because they wanted to be.

So far as the volunteers were concerned, my job was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, then administer orientations, and support them through the duration of their stay. There was this kind of charm between the volunteers I’d go on it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after work excursions. We wound up not simply changing the lives of many others, but changing the lifestyles of eachother. Dealing together with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe that I can accomplish almost any task, however more importantly it gave me a genuine sense of satisfaction in being able to work hard at work worth doing.

As often as I could I’d break away from the office and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes during Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of work. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was consistently very receptive, helpful, and respectful of our help. The scene was a great amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. The frequent bond that tied us together was that the very simple notion of creating a home. Only watching everybody else working, laughing, grinning, and discussing created an atmosphere therefore rich with emotion it made me reconsider how I defined riches. The home was symbolic of more than just a place of residence. It represented a motto, a coming together, along with an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry with us to the rest of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been true. We’re not just building houses, but we were building lives.

Internationally or conflict settlement or individual rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to think that there are many methods to get involved and give back to the global community. But these dilemmas exist to not create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you start to begin making positive contributions equally so long when you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this is one of the toughest decisions to create. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Not even close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone cannot eliminate poverty housing, which directed me to this answer I was looking for. Perhaps one man can not change the entire world, but the world can certainly change for one individual. And it has this domino effect, that if spread across the planet we could, collectively, reach the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the heat of humanity instead of its own indifference.
