building a house versus renovating – Renovating in Melbourne: the hidden complexities of inner
I used ton’t mind the heat so much, I was only glad to be out. But it did slow the speed of the progress at the construction website.
I’ll admit that building houses was perhaps not in my own job description. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt much joyful, however because I was truly satisfied. I welcomed a gentle breeze that suddenly swept across the scene and required my own thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. How did I arrive here?
For many years I had the dream of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing a different culture. Are not there something more alive than regular and monotony? Occasionally I would often wonder if many everyone was really waking up in the morning motivated by the work that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I needed a switch. I needed to become consciously involved in something positive which could provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that even exist, and if yes where do I register? Yet, I finally took the initiative and started to realize this fantasy once I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really transform the world? I wanted to find out.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat only started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and I was the very first to go through the app. I felt that this was a tremendous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed the aid of volunteers. Beginning I was a bit on edge, in due time I found my groove within the Habitat frame. It was incredible – that I was actually enjoying office job. I took part in the development of substances like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I caused a task force for the continuous advancement of the IVP program. I even handled an on-site volunteer training regime at El Salvador. Yet the best part in my job was having to work along with other volunteers, those who were there not because they must function but have there been only because they wished to become.
So far as the volunteers have been concerned my role was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and encourage them during their stay. There was this kind of charisma between the volunteers I’d take it a step further and plan weekend excursions and after work outings. We ended up not simply changing the lifestyles of many others, however, changing the lives of each other.
As often as I could I would break out from the workplace and take volunteers build trips to Habitat construction sights during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of job. Out at the sight we would work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The scene was a amazing amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. Yet the common bond which tied us together was that the simple thought of creating a home. Just watching everybody else working, laughing, smiling, and discussing created an atmosphere so rich with emotion that it made me reconsider the way I recognized riches. Your house was symbolic of more than only a place of dwelling. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, and an inherent comprehension of equality which we’ll carry together to the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it had been authentic. We were not only building homes, we were building lives.
Internationally or domestically, conflict resolution or human rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to believe that there are many ways to get involved and give back to the international community. But these problems exist not to create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you start to get started making positive gifts just so long when you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this really is among the toughest decisions to make. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Can I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot eliminate poverty housing, which led me to this answer I was looking for. Perhaps one man can’t change the entire world, however, the planet can surely change for a single individual. And it’s this domino effect, that should disperse throughout the globe we can, together, reach the unthinkable and make a world that reflects the warmth of humankind instead of its indifference.
