building a house vs renting – 07/19 The Cost of Renting vs. Buying a Tiny Home Tiny
I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was only happy to be out. But it did slow the rate of our progress at the construction website. It had been grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, laying cubes, and bending rebar, all of that I had little to no working experience in.
I’ll admit that construction houses was perhaps not in my job description. As I sat there with my back against a tree I poured a half jar of water on my mind. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt much more joyful, but because I had been truly pleased. I recognized a gentle breeze that unexpectedly drifted across the scene and took my thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. How can I get here?
Are not there something more to life than regular and monotony? At times I would often wonder if most everyone was really waking at the morning inspired by the job that they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I wanted to eventually become consciously involved with something positive which would give me a feeling of purpose. Does that also exist, and if so where can I subscribe? However, I finally chose and started to realize this dream once I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really change the whole world? I desired to find out.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and activity. Habitat just started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and I was the initial to experience the program. My official title was the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed that this was an enormous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the support of volunteers. Getting started I was a bit on edge, but in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying off ice work. I took part in the development of materials like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a task force for its continuous improvement of the IVP program. I administered an on site volunteer training program at El Salvador. Yet the best part in my job was getting to work along with other volunteers, people who weren’t because they must be but have there been only because they desired to be.
As far as the volunteers have been concerned my job was to coordinate home and coming logistics, then administer orientations, and encourage them throughout their stay. There is such a charisma amongst the volunteers I would take it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after work excursions. We wound up not simply changing the lives of many others, however, shifting the lives of eachother.
Normally as I could I’d break out from the workplace and take volunteers build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of your job. Out at the sight we would work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was always very receptive, helpful, and respectful of our help. The scene was a great amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. Yet the common bond which tied us together was that the easy notion of creating a home. Only watching everybody working, laughing, smiling, and discussing created a feeling so rich with emotion it made me reconsider the way I defined wealth. Your house was symbolic of more than just a place of residence. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent comprehension of equality which we’ll carry with us for the rest of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been true. We were not just building homes, we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict resolution or human rights, the environment – it’s disheartening to consider that there are many ways to get involved and give back to the global community. It doesn’t matter where you start to start making positive gifts just as long as you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this really is one of the toughest decisions to make. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Not really close. Did I succeed? Definitely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I cannot eliminate poverty home, that led me to this answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 person can not change the planet, but the planet can surely change for a single person. And it has this domino effect, that if spread across the planet we could, collectively, reach the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the heat of humanity in the place of its indifference.
