building a house without bricks – Bangalore’s Greenest Homes: How mud bricks helped the
The sun beat down from overhead with this kind of intensity I was breaking out in a sweat while sitting in the colour. I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was simply glad to be out. But it did impede the speed of the progress at the construction site.
I will acknowledge that construction houses was perhaps not in my own job description. When I sat there with my back against a shrub I poured a half bottle of cool water on my head. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt much joyful, however because I was truly content. I welcomed a gentle breeze that suddenly drifted across the scene and took my own thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. Just how can I get here?
For many years that I had the dream of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing a different culture. Wasn’t there something more your than routine and monotony? Occasionally I would often wonder if many people were really getting up in the morning inspired by the job they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I needed a switch. I wanted to eventually become consciously engaged with something positive which could provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where can I sign up? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. But, I finally chose and started to realize this fantasy once I traveled to Costa Rica to a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really change the world? I needed to discover.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat only started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and I had been the very first to go through the app. I believed that this was an enormous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the support of volunteers. Getting started I had been a bit on edge, in due time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying off ice job. I participate in the growth of materials such as a volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous advancement of this IVP program. I administered an on-site volunteer training plan in El Salvador. Yet the best part about my job was really getting to work alongside other volunteers, people who were there not because that they had to be but were there simply because they wanted to be.
As far as the volunteers have been concerned, my role was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them through the duration of their stay. There was such a charisma between the volunteers I’d take it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after work outings. We ended up not simply altering the lifestyles of others, but changing the lives of eachother. Dealing with Habitat gave me the confidence to feel that I could accomplish almost any job, however more importantly it gave me a genuine sense of satisfaction in to be able to work hard at work worth doing.
As often as I could I would break out from the workplace and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see firsthand the culmination of one’s job. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was consistently very receptive, helpful, and appreciative of the help. The spectacle was a amazing amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. The common bond that tied us together was the easy notion of building a home. Only watching every one working, laughing, grinning, and discussing generated a feeling so rich with emotion it made me rethink the way I defined wealth. Your home was emblematic greater than just a place of residence. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent comprehension of equality which we’ll carry together for the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was true. We were not just building houses, but we were building lives.
Internationally or domestically, conflict resolution or individual rights, the environment – it’s disheartening to believe that there are so many ways to get involved and give back to the international community. It isn’t important where you begin to begin making positive gifts just so long as you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this really is one of the toughest decisions to make. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Not really close. Can I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot do away with poverty housing, which directed me into this answer I was looking for. Perhaps one person can not change the planet, but the world can surely change for one person. And it has this domino effect, that if spread across the planet we could, together, reach the unthinkable and make a world that reflects the warmth of mankind as an alternative of its indifference.
