I used ton’t mind the heat, I was just happy to be out. Yet it did slow the speed of our progress at the construction website. It was grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, laying blocks, and bending rebar, most of that I had little to no working expertise in.

I’ll admit that building houses was perhaps not in my job description. When I sat there with my back against a tree I pumped a half bottle of water on my mind. A grin crossed my face, not because I felt joyful, but because I had been truly satisfied. I recognized a gentle breeze that unexpectedly swept round the scene and took my own thoughts withit. My mind started to wonder. How did I get here?

Wasn’t there something more to life than routine and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if a lot of everyone was really waking at the morning inspired by the job that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I needed a switch. I desired to become consciously engaged in something positive which would provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where can I register? Yet, I finally chose and started to realize this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really change the world? I wanted to learn.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat just started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and I was the very first to experience the application. My official title was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I felt this is a tremendous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the support of volunteers. Getting started I had been somewhat on edge, but in the time I found my groove within the Habitat frame. It was unbelievable – I was actually enjoying office work. I participate in the development of substances like a volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I caused a taskforce for its continuous improvement of the IVP program. I even handled an onsite volunteer training program in El Salvador. Yet the best part in my job was really getting to work along with other volunteers, people who weren’t because they must be but have there been only because they wanted to become.

As far as the volunteers were concerned my job was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, then administer orientations, and support them through the duration of their stay. There is such a charm amongst the volunteers I would often simply take it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after work excursions. We wound up not simply altering the lives of many others, however, shifting the lives of eachother. Dealing together with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I could accomplish some endeavor, but more importantly it gave me a more real sense of pride in to be able to work hard at work worth doing.

Normally as I could I’d break out from the workplace and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes during Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of work. Out at the sight we would work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of our help. The scene was a great amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond which tied us together wasn’t that the very simple thought of building a home. Just seeing everyone else working, laughing, smiling, and discussing created an atmosphere therefore rich with emotion it made me reconsider the way I defined wealth. Your home was emblematic greater than just a place of dwelling. It represented a unity, a coming together, along with an inherent comprehension of equality which we’ll carry together to the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been true. We’re not just building houses, but we were building resides.

Internationally or conflict resolution or individual rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to believe there are so many methods to get involved and give back to the international community. But these dilemmas exist not to create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you begin to begin making positive gifts equally so long as you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this really is one of the toughest decisions to produce. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Not really close. Did I succeed? Definitely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I alone can’t get rid of poverty home, that directed me to the answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 man can not change the planet, however, the entire world can definitely change for a single individual. And it’s this domino effect, that should spread across the planet we could, together, achieve the unthinkable and create a world that reflects the heat of humankind as an alternative of its indifference.
