I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was only happy to be outside. But, it did impede the rate of the progress at the construction site.
I’ll admit that building houses was not in my job description. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt more refreshed, however because I was truly pleased. I welcomed a gentle breeze that suddenly swept round the scene and required my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how did I get here?
Are not there something more alive than routine and monotony? At times I would often wonder if most everyone was really waking up at the morning inspired by the work they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I wanted to eventually become actively engaged with something positive which could provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that also exist, and if yes where do I register? Can anyone really transform the world? I needed to learn.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat simply started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long-term volunteers and I was the initial to experience the application. I believed that this was an enormous opportunity since the organization was built and existed the aid of volunteers. Starting out I had been a bit on edge, in the time I found my groove within the Habitat frame. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying off ice job. I participate in the creation of substances such as an volunteer manual, interview guides, and test forms. I worked with a task force for the continuous improvement of the IVP program. I even handled an on site volunteer training plan in El Salvador. Yet the greatest part about my job was having to work alongside other volunteers, those who weren’t because they had to function but were there only because they wanted to become.
So far as the volunteers had been concerned my job was to coordinate home and coming logistics, then administer orientations, and encourage them during their stay. There is such a charisma amongst the volunteers I’d often simply take it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after work outings. We ended up not just changing the lifestyles of many others, however, changing the lifestyles of eachother.
Normally as I could I’d break away from the office and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of work. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was always very receptive, helpful, and respectful of our help. The spectacle was a fantastic amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. Yet the frequent bond which tied us together was the simple thought of building a home. Only watching everyone else working, laughing, smiling, and sharing created a feeling so rich with emotion that it made me rethink how I recognized riches. Your house was emblematic of more than just a place of dwelling. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, and also an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry with us to the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was authentic. We’re not only building homes, we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict resolution or individual rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to think there are so many methods to get involved and give back to the global community. But these issues exist not to create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you begin to get started making positive gifts just for as long when you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this is one of the toughest decisions to make. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not really close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I alone cannot eliminate poverty home, which directed me to this answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 person can not change the planet, however, the world can surely change for one person. And it’s this domino effect, that should spread throughout the globe we can, collectively, reach the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the warmth of mankind in the place of its indifference.
