building house for profit – These folks feed their family with a garden in their
The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat whilst sitting in the colour. I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was simply glad to be outside. Yet it did impede the rate of the progress at the construction site. It was grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, putting blocks, and bending rebar, most that I had little to no working knowledge in.
I’ll admit that construction houses was not in my own job description. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt joyful, but because I had been truly pleased. I welcomed a gentle breeze which unexpectedly drifted round the scene and required my thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. Just how can I arrive here?
Are not there something more to life than regular and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if a lot of everyone was really waking in the morning motivated by the job that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I needed a switch. I desired to become consciously involved with something positive which would provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that exist, and if yes where do I subscribe? But, I finally chose and started to realize this fantasy when I traveled to Costa Rica in a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really change the whole world? I wanted to find out.
Habitat just started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long-term volunteers and I was the very first to experience the application. My official title was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I felt this is a tremendous opportunity since the organization was constructed and existed the support of volunteers. Getting started I was a bit on edge, but in the time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was incredible – that I was actually enjoying off ice job. I participate in the growth of materials such as a volunteer manual, meeting guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous advancement of the IVP program. I even handled an on site volunteer training program at El Salvador. Yet the best part about my job was getting to work along with other volunteers, those who weren’t because they had to function but were there simply because they wished to be.
As far as the volunteers were concerned, my job was to coordinate home and coming logistics, administer orientations, and support them through the duration of their stay. There is this type of charisma amongst the volunteers I’d often simply take it a step further and plan weekend excursions and after work excursions. We wound up not just changing the lifestyles of many others, however, shifting the lives of eachother.
As often as I could I would break away from the workplace and accept volunteers build trips to Habitat building landscapes during Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of your job. Out at the sight we would work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was always very receptive, helpful, and respectful of our help. The scene was a wonderful amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond that tied us together was the very simple notion of creating a home. Just seeing everybody else working, laughing, smiling, and discussing created a feeling therefore rich with emotion it made me rethink the way I defined riches. Your home was emblematic greater than only a place of dwelling. It represented a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry with us to the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was true. We were not only building houses, but we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict resolution or human rights, the surroundings – it’s disheartening to consider there are so many ways to get involved and give back to the international community. However, these dilemmas exist to not create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you begin to get started making positive contributions equally so long as you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this really is one of the toughest decisions to produce. I picked the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not really close. Did I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone can’t get rid of poverty home, that directed me into the answer I was looking for. Perhaps 1 man can’t change the entire world, but the entire world can surely change for one individual. And it has this domino effect, that if spread across the planet we could, collectively, achieve the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the warmth of humankind as an alternative of its indifference.
