I used ton’t mind the heat, I was simply happy to be out. However, it did impede the rate of our progress at the construction website. It was grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, putting blocks, and bending rebar, most of which I had little to no practical knowledge in.

I will acknowledge that building houses was perhaps not in my job description. When I sat there with my back against a shrub I squeezed a half bottle of cool water on my mind. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt much refreshed, but because I had been truly pleased. I recognized a gentle breeze which unexpectedly swept round the scene and required my thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how did I arrive here?

For many years I had the fantasy of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing a different culture. Wasn’t there something more alive than routine and monotony? At times I’d often wonder if many everyone was really getting up in the morning motivated by the job they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I wanted a change. I desired to become actively engaged with something positive which could provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where do I sign up? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Can anyone really transform the whole world? I needed to learn.

Habitat only started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long term volunteers and I was the 1st to experience the application. I felt this was an enormous opportunity since the organization was constructed and existed the support of volunteers. Beginning I had been a bit on edge, in due time I found my groove over the Habitat frame. It was incredible – that I was actually enjoying office work. I participate in the creation of substances like a volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a task force for the continuous advancement of the IVP program. I even handled an on site volunteer training program at El Salvador. Yet the greatest part about my job was to work along side other volunteers, those who weren’t because that they had to be but have there been simply because they desired to be.

As far as the volunteers have been concerned, my role was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them through the duration of their stay. There was such a charisma between the volunteers I would go on it a step further and plan weekend excursions and after-work excursions. We finished up not just altering the lifestyles of many others, however, changing the lives of one another. Dealing with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I can accomplish almost any job, however more importantly it gave me a more real sense of pride in to be ready to perform hard at work worth doing.

As often as I could I’d break away from the workplace and take volunteers build trips to Habitat building landscapes during Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see firsthand the culmination of one’s job. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was always very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The spectacle was a fantastic amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. The common bond which tied us together wasn’t the very simple thought of developing a home. Only seeing everyone else working, laughing, grinning, and discussing created a feeling therefore rich with emotion it made me rethink how I defined riches. Your home was symbolic of more than just a place of dwelling. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, along with an inherent comprehension of equality that we’ll carry with us for the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been authentic. We were not just building houses, but we were building resides.

Internationally or conflict settlement or human rights, the surroundings – it’s disheartening to believe that there are so many methods to get involved and give back to the international community. It doesn’t matter where you start to start making positive gifts just so long when you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this really is among the toughest decisions to produce. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not really close. Can I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone cannot get rid of poverty home, which directed me to the answer I was looking for. Perhaps 1 person can’t change the planet, but the entire world can definitely change for a single individual. And it has this domino effect, which should disperse throughout the planet we could, together, reach the unthinkable and make a world that reflects the warmth of mankind in the place of its own indifference.
