building house near creek – Man & Triadelphia District Logan, WV History and Nostalgia
The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat when sitting in the shade. I didn’t mind the heat, I was simply glad to be out. But it did impede the speed of our progress at the construction site. It was grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, putting blocks, and bending rebar, all which I had little to no working knowledge in.
I’ll admit that building houses was perhaps not in my job description. When I sat there with my back against a tree I pumped a half jar of cool water on my mind. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt more joyful, but because I had been truly satisfied. I recognized a gentle breeze which unexpectedly swept round the scene and required my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how did I get here?
For several years that I had the fantasy of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing another culture. Are not there something more to life than regular and monotony? At times I’d often wonder if many everyone was really getting up in the morning inspired by the job that they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I had a switch. I wanted to become consciously involved in something positive that would provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where can I register? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Yet, I finally chose and began to see this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really transform the world? I wanted to learn.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat simply started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and that I had been the 1st to experience the program. My official title was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I felt this was a tremendous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed the aid of volunteers. Starting out I had been somewhat on edge, but in the time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying off ice job. I took part in the evolution of materials such as a volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a taskforce for the continuous improvement of the IVP program. I administered an on site volunteer training regime in El Salvador. Yet the greatest part about my job was really getting to work alongside other volunteers, people who weren’t because they had to be but have there been simply because they desired to become.
So far as the volunteers have been concerned my job was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them during their stay. There was this type of charisma between the volunteers I would simply take it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after-work outings. We wound up not simply altering the lives of many others, but shifting the lifestyles of eachother.
Normally as I could I would break out from the office and take volunteers build trips to Habitat construction sights during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see first hand the culmination of one’s job. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was always very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The spectacle was a amazing amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. Yet the common bond which tied us together wasn’t the easy notion of building a home. Just seeing everybody else working, laughing, grinning, and discussing generated a feeling so rich with emotion it made me reconsider how I recognized riches. The house was emblematic greater than just a place of residence. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and an inherent comprehension of equality which we’ll carry together to the remainder of our lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was true. We’re not just building houses, but we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict settlement or human rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to consider there are so many ways of getting involved and give back to the international community. It isn’t important where you begin to get started making positive contributions equally so long when you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this really is one of the toughest decisions to make. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Not really close. Can I succeed? Absolutely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I cannot do away with poverty home, that led me into the answer I was searching for. Perhaps one man can not change the entire world, but the entire world can definitely change for one person. And it’s this domino effect, which if disperse across the planet we could, together, achieve the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the warmth of humanity as an alternative of its own indifference.
