The sun beat down from overhead with this kind of intensity I was breaking out in a sweat while sitting in the colour. I didn’t mind the heat, I was just happy to be outside. Yet it did slow the speed of our progress at the construction website.

I will acknowledge that construction houses was perhaps not in my own job description. When I sat there with my back against a tree I pumped a half jar of cool water on my head. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt more refreshed, however because I was truly pleased. I welcomed a gentle breeze which unexpectedly drifted across the scene and required my own thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. Just how can I get here?

Wasn’t there something more your than routine and monotony? Occasionally I’d often wonder if a lot of everyone was really waking in the morning motivated by the job they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I needed to become consciously involved in something positive that could provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where can I sign up? But, I finally chose and began to realize this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica in a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really transform the whole world? I desired to learn.

Habitat just started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and that I was the 1st to go through the app. My official title was the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed that this is a tremendous opportunity since the organization was constructed and existed on the aid of volunteers. Getting started I was a bit on edge, in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying office work. I took part in the growth of materials like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and evaluation forms. I caused a task force for the continuous advancement of the IVP program. I even handled an onsite volunteer training program in El Salvador. The best part in my job was having to work along side other volunteers, people who were there not because they must be but were there only because they desired to be.

So far as the volunteers have been concerned, my job was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and support them through the duration of their stay. There was this kind of charm amongst the volunteers I would take it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after-work outings. We finished up not just changing the lives of others, however, changing the lifestyles of one another. Working with Habitat gave me the confidence to feel that I can accomplish almost any job, but more importantly it gave me a more genuine sense of fulfillment in being able to perform hard at work worth doing.

Normally as I could I’d break away from the workplace and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see firsthand the culmination of one’s work. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was always very receptive, helpful, and respectful of the help. The scene was a wonderful amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond that tied us together was the easy notion of building a home. Just seeing every one working, laughing, grinning, and discussing generated a feeling so rich with emotion that it made me rethink how I defined wealth. Your home was symbolic of more than just a place of dwelling. It represented a unity, a coming together, along with an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry together for the rest of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been true. We’re not only building homes, we were building resides.

Internationally or domestically, conflict settlement or human rights, the surroundings – it’s disheartening to consider that there are so many methods to get involved and give back to the global community. However, these problems exist to not create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you start to begin making positive gifts just so long when you make your decision to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this really is one of the toughest decisions to create. I picked the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Not even close. Can I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone cannot get rid of poverty home, that directed me into the answer I was looking for. Perhaps one person can not change the entire world, but the world can definitely change for a single individual. And it’s this domino effect, that if spread across the globe we can, together, reach the unthinkable and make a world that reflects the heat of humanity instead of its indifference.
