The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat when sitting in the shade. I used ton’t mind the heat, I was only glad to be outside. But, it did slow the rate of our progress at the construction website.
I’ll admit that construction houses was perhaps not in my job description. A smile crossed my head, not because I felt joyful, but because I was truly satisfied. I welcomed a gentle breeze which suddenly swept round the landscape and took my thoughts withit. My mind started to wonder. How did I get here?
Are not there something more your than routine and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if many people were really getting up in the morning motivated by the job that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I had a change. I needed to become consciously engaged in something positive that will provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where can I sign up? Can one person really transform the whole world? I desired to find out.
Habitat simply started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long-term volunteers and I was the 1st to go through the application. I believed this was a tremendous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed on the aid of volunteers. Getting started I was a bit on edge, but in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – I was actually enjoying office job. I participate in the growth of substances like a volunteer manual, interview guides, and test forms. I caused a task force for its continuous improvement of the IVP program. I handled an on site volunteer training plan in El Salvador. Yet the best part about my job was to work along side other volunteers, people who weren’t because they must function but have there been simply because they wished to be.
So far as the volunteers have been concerned my role was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, administer orientations, and support them through the duration of their stay. There is such a charisma between the volunteers I would take it a step further and plan weekend trips and after-work excursions. We wound up not just changing the lives of others, but shifting the lives of each other. Dealing together with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I could accomplish virtually any endeavor, but more importantly it gave me a more genuine sense of satisfaction in to be able to perform hard at work worth doing.
Normally as I could I’d break out from the workplace and take volunteers build trips to Habitat building landscapes throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of job. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was always very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The spectacle was a wonderful amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. The common bond that tied us together was the simple thought of developing a home. Only watching everyone else working, laughing, grinning, and sharing generated an atmosphere therefore rich with emotion that it made me reconsider how I defined riches. Your house was emblematic of more than only a place of residence. It represented a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry with us for the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been authentic. We were not only building houses, but we were building lives.
Internationally or domestically, conflict resolution or human rights, the environment – it’s disheartening to think that there are many ways of getting involved and give back to the international community. It doesn’t matter where you begin to get started making positive contributions just for as long as you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this really is one of the toughest decisions to make. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Not really close. Did I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I can’t eliminate poverty housing, that led me into the answer I was searching for. Perhaps one person can’t change the planet, however, the world can surely change for one person. And it has this domino effect, which should disperse throughout the planet we could, together, achieve the unthinkable and create a world that reflects the heat of humanity in the place of its indifference.
