I didn’t mind the heat, I was only happy to be out. However, it did impede the rate of our progress at the construction site. It was grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, putting cubes, and bending rebar, all that I had little to no working knowledge in.
I will acknowledge that building houses was perhaps not in my job description. When I sat there with my back against a tree I poured a half jar of water on my mind. A smile crossed my head, not because I felt more refreshed, however because I was truly content. I welcomed a gentle breeze that suddenly swept round the landscape and took my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. How did I arrive here?
Wasn’t there something more alive than routine and monotony? Occasionally I’d often wonder if many people were really waking up at the morning motivated by the job that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I wanted to become consciously engaged in something positive that could provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where can I register? Can anyone really change the whole world? I wanted to discover.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat only started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long term volunteers and that I was the initial to experience the app. My official name was the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed this is a tremendous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed the aid of volunteers. Starting out I had been a bit on edge, but in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying off ice work. I participate in the creation of substances like an volunteer manual, interview guides, and test forms. I worked with a taskforce for the continuous advancement of the IVP program. I administered an onsite volunteer training regime at El Salvador. Yet the greatest part about my job was getting to work along with other volunteers, people who weren’t because that they must function but have there been simply because they wanted to become.
As far as the volunteers had been concerned my role was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, administer orientations, and support them through the duration of their stay. There is this type of charm between the volunteers I would simply take it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after-work excursions. We ended up not simply altering the lives of many others, however, shifting the lives of each other. Dealing together with Habitat gave me the confidence to feel that I can accomplish virtually any task, however more importantly it gave me a more genuine sense of fulfillment in to be able to perform hard at work worth doing.
Normally as I could I would break out from the workplace and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of work. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was always very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The scene was a wonderful amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. The frequent bond that tied us together was that the very simple thought of creating a home. Just watching everybody working, laughing, smiling, and sharing generated a feeling so rich with emotion it made me rethink the way I recognized riches. Your house was emblematic of more than only a place of dwelling. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry together to the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was authentic. We’re not just building homes, we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict resolution or individual rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to consider that there are many ways to get involved and give back to the international community. However, these problems exist to not create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you start to begin making positive contributions just so long as you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this is one of the toughest decisions to create. I picked the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Did I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot do away with poverty home, which led me to the answer I was looking for. Perhaps one person can not change the world, however, the planet can surely change for one person. And it’s this domino effect, which if disperse throughout the globe we can, collectively, achieve the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the heat of mankind in the place of its indifference.
