The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I was breaking out in a sweat while sitting in the colour. I used ton’t mind the heat, I was just happy to be outside. However it did slow the speed of our progress at the construction site.

I’ll admit that building houses was not in my job description. As I sat there with my back against a tree I pumped a half jar of water over my mind. A smile crossed my head, not because I felt much joyful, but because I was truly satisfied. I recognized a gentle breeze which unexpectedly swept round the landscape and required my thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. How did I arrive here?

Wasn’t there something more to life than regular and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if a lot of everyone was really getting at the morning motivated by the job they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I wanted a change. I desired to become consciously involved in something positive which will provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if yes where can I sign up? However, I finally took the initiative and started to realize this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really change the whole world? I desired to learn.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat only started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long-term volunteers and that I was the very first to go through the application. I believed this was a tremendous opportunity since the organization was constructed and existed on the support of volunteers. Starting out I had been somewhat on edge, but in due time I found my groove within the Habitat frame. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying office work. I took part in the creation of materials such as an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and evaluation forms. I caused a task force for its continuous advancement of the IVP program. I even handled an on-site volunteer training program at El Salvador. The best part about my job was getting to work alongside other volunteers, people who were there not because they had to be but have there been only because they wanted to be.

As far as the volunteers had been concerned, my role was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them through the duration of their stay. There was such a charisma amongst the volunteers I would often go on it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after-work excursions. We wound up not simply altering the lives of many others, but changing the lifestyles of each other. Working together with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I could accomplish some endeavor, but more importantly it gave me a genuine sense of satisfaction in to be able to perform hard at work worth doing.

Normally as I could I would break out from the office and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see firsthand the culmination of work. Out at the sight we would work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was consistently very receptive, helpful, and respectful of our help. The spectacle was a fantastic amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond that tied us together was that the simple thought of building a home. Just watching everybody else working, laughing, smiling, and sharing created a feeling therefore rich with emotion it made me rethink how I recognized wealth. The home was symbolic greater than just a place of dwelling. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, along with an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry together for the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it had been authentic. We were not only building homes, we were building resides.

Internationally or conflict settlement or human rights, the environment – it’s disheartening to think that there are so many methods to get involved and give back to the global community. But these issues exist to not create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you start to start making positive contributions just for as long as you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this is one of the toughest decisions to produce. I picked the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not really close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone cannot eliminate poverty housing, which led me to the answer I was looking for. Perhaps one person can’t change the world, however, the planet can certainly change for a single individual. And it’s this domino effect, that if spread across the planet we could, together, achieve the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the warmth of mankind in the place of its indifference.
