The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat whilst sitting in the colour. I used ton’t mind the heat, I was only glad to be out. But, it did impede the speed of the progress at the construction website.

I will acknowledge that building houses was perhaps not in my own job description. A grin crossed my face, not because I felt more refreshed, but because I was truly satisfied. I recognized a gentle breeze which suddenly swept round the landscape and took my thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. How can I arrive here?

Wasn’t there something more alive than routine and monotony? At times I would often wonder if a lot of people were really waking up in the morning motivated by the job they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I desired to become consciously engaged with something positive which would give me a sense of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where can I sign up? Can one person really transform the whole world? I needed to learn.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat simply started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long term volunteers and I had been the 1st to experience the app. I felt this was an enormous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the aid of volunteers. Beginning I was somewhat on edge, but in the time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying off ice work. I took part in the creation of substances like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I caused a taskforce for its continuous advancement of this IVP program. I even administered an on-site volunteer training program at El Salvador. Yet the greatest part about my job was really getting to work alongside other volunteers, those who were there not because they must be but were there only because they wished to become.

As far as the volunteers were concerned, my job was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, then administer orientations, and encourage them throughout their stay. There is such a charisma between the volunteers I would go on it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after-work excursions. We wound up not simply changing the lifestyles of others, but shifting the lives of eachother. Dealing with Habitat gave me the confidence to feel that I could accomplish some endeavor, however more importantly it gave me a genuine sense of fulfillment in being able to work hard at work worth doing.

Normally as I could I’d break out from the workplace and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of job. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was always very open-minded, friendly, and appreciative of the help. The spectacle was a wonderful amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. The frequent bond which tied us together was that the simple notion of building a home. Only seeing everybody working, laughing, grinning, and discussing created a feeling therefore rich with emotion it made me rethink how I defined riches. The home was symbolic greater than only a place of dwelling. It represented a unity, a coming together, and an inherent comprehension of equality which we’ll carry with us to the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was authentic. We’re not only building homes, we were building lives.

Internationally or domestically, conflict settlement or individual rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to believe there are so many methods to get involved and give back to the global community. However, these issues exist not to create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you begin to begin making positive gifts just for as long as you make your decision to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this really is one of the toughest decisions to create. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Can I succeed? Absolutely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I cannot do away with poverty housing, that led me into the answer I was searching for. Perhaps one man can not change the entire world, but the world can surely change for a single person. And it’s this domino effect, that should disperse throughout the planet we could, collectively, reach the unthinkable and create a world that reflects the heat of humankind in the place of its own indifference.
