The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat when sitting in the colour. I used ton’t mind the heat, I was simply happy to be out. Yet it did slow the speed of the progress at the construction site. It had been grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, putting blocks, and bending rebar, all that I had little to no working knowledge in.
I’ll admit that building houses was not in my own job description. As I sat there with my back against a tree I pumped a half bottle of cool water over my mind. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt much more refreshed, however because I was truly content. I recognized a gentle breeze that unexpectedly swept across the landscape and took my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how can I arrive here?
Are not there something more your than regular and monotony? Occasionally I’d often wonder if most everyone was really waking in the morning inspired by the work that they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I needed a switch. I desired to become actively involved in something positive which will give me a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if yes where do I subscribe? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. But, I finally chose and started to see this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica in a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really transform the world? I needed to find out.
Habitat only started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and I had been the initial to go through the program. My official name was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed that this was an enormous opportunity since the organization was constructed and existed the support of volunteers. Beginning I had been a bit on edge, but in the time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying off ice job. I participate in the growth of substances like an volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a taskforce for the continuous advancement of this IVP program. I administered an on site volunteer training plan at El Salvador. Yet the best part in my job was getting to work along with other volunteers, those who weren’t because they had to function but have there been only because they wanted to become.
So far as the volunteers had been concerned, my role was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and support them during their stay. There was this type of charm amongst the volunteers I’d go on it a step further and plan weekend excursions and after work excursions. We finished up not simply changing the lifestyles of others, but changing the lifestyles of each other. Dealing with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I can accomplish virtually any task, however more importantly it gave me a genuine sense of fulfillment in to be ready to perform hard at work worth doing.
As often as I could I’d break out from the office and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of one’s work. Out at the sight we would work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was consistently very receptive, helpful, and respectful of our help. The spectacle was a fantastic amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the common bond that tied us together wasn’t that the simple notion of creating a home. Just seeing everybody else working, laughing, smiling, and sharing created a feeling so rich with emotion that it made me reconsider the way I defined wealth. The house was emblematic greater than just a place of dwelling. It represented a unity, a coming together, and an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry together for the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was true. We’re not just building homes, we were building lives.
Internationally or conflict resolution or individual rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to believe that there are so many methods to get involved and give back to the global community. However, these problems exist not to create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you start to get started making positive gifts equally for as long when you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this really is one of the toughest decisions to make. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I can’t eliminate poverty home, that directed me into the answer I was looking for. Perhaps one person can not change the planet, but the world can certainly change for one person. And it’s this domino effect, that if disperse throughout the planet we could, collectively, achieve the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the heat of humankind in the place of its indifference.
