The sun beat down from overhead with this kind of intensity I was breaking out in a sweat while sitting in the colour. I used ton’t mind the heat so much, I was simply happy to be out. Yet, it did impede the rate of our progress at the construction website.
I’ll admit that building houses was not in my own job description. When I sat there with my back against a shrub I poured a half bottle of water on my head. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt much joyful, but because I had been truly content. I recognized a gentle breeze which unexpectedly swept across the landscape and required my thoughts withit. My mind started to wonder. Just how did I get here?
Are not there something more alive than routine and monotony? Sometimes I’d often wonder if a lot of people were really getting up in the morning motivated by the work they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I wanted a change. I needed to become consciously involved with something positive which will give me a sense of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where can I subscribe? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. However, I finally took the initiative and began to realize this dream once I traveled to Costa Rica in a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really transform the world? I needed to learn.
Habitat simply started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and that I was the 1st to go through the program. My official name was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed this is an enormous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the aid of volunteers. Beginning I had been a bit on edge, in the time I found my groove within the Habitat frame. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying office work. I took part in the evolution of substances such as a volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I caused a task force for the continuous advancement of the IVP program. I even handled an on-site volunteer training regime in El Salvador. Yet the best part about my job was really getting to work alongside other volunteers, people who were there not because that they must be but have there been simply because they desired to be.
As far as the volunteers have been concerned, my job was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, administer orientations, and support them throughout their stay. There was such a charm between the volunteers I would often go on it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after work excursions. We wound up not just changing the lifestyles of others, but shifting the lifestyles of eachother. Dealing with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe that I could accomplish virtually any endeavor, but more importantly it gave me a more genuine sense of fulfillment in being able to perform hard at work worth doing.
Normally as I could I’d break out from the office and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see first hand the culmination of one’s job. Out at the sight we would work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of our help. The spectacle was a wonderful amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. The frequent bond that tied us together was the simple notion of creating a home. Only watching every one working, laughing, smiling, and discussing generated an atmosphere therefore rich with emotion it made me reconsider the way I defined riches. Your house was emblematic greater than just a place of residence. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry together for the remainder of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been authentic. We were not only building houses, but we were building lives.
Internationally or conflict resolution or individual rights, the surroundings – it’s disheartening to think that there are many methods of getting involved and give back to the international community. But these dilemmas exist not to create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you begin to begin making positive gifts just so long as you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this is among the toughest decisions to produce. I chose the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I alone can’t eliminate poverty housing, which led me into this answer I was looking for. Perhaps one man can not change the planet, but the world can definitely change for one person. And it has this domino effect, that if disperse across the globe we can, together, achieve the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the warmth of mankind as an alternative of its indifference.
