building house terminology – Golcar Passivhaus: Roof strategy Green Building Store
The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat while sitting in the color. I used ton’t mind the heat, I was just glad to be out. But it did slow the rate of the progress at the construction website.
I will acknowledge that building houses was perhaps not in my job description. As I sat there with my back against a tree I poured a half jar of water on my head. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt more refreshed, however because I was truly satisfied. I recognized a gentle breeze that unexpectedly drifted across the landscape and required my thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. How did I arrive here?
Are not there something more alive than regular and monotony? At times I’d often wonder if a lot of everyone was really getting at the morning inspired by the work they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a change. I desired to become consciously engaged in something positive which could give me a sense of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where can I register? However, I finally took the initiative and began to see this dream once I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really change the whole world? I desired to find out.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat only started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long-term volunteers and that I had been the initial to experience the program. I felt this is a tremendous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed on the aid of volunteers. Beginning I was somewhat on edge, but in the time I found my groove within the Habitat frame. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying office job. I took part in the creation of substances like a volunteer manual, interview guides, and test forms. I caused a task force for the continuous advancement of this IVP program. I administered an on-site volunteer training program at El Salvador. The greatest part in my job was to work along side other volunteers, those who were there not because they had to function but were there simply because they desired to be.
So far as the volunteers had been concerned, my role was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and support them during their stay. There is this kind of charisma between the volunteers I’d go on it a step further and plan weekend excursions and after-work excursions. We finished up not just altering the lives of others, but changing the lives of eachother.
Normally as I could I’d break out from the office and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see first hand the culmination of one’s work. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was consistently very receptive, helpful, and respectful of our help. The scene was a wonderful amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. The common bond which tied us together wasn’t the simple thought of developing a home. Only watching everybody working, laughing, smiling, and discussing generated a feeling so rich with emotion that I made me reconsider the way I defined riches. Your house was symbolic greater than only a place of dwelling. It represented a motto, a coming together, along with an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry together for the rest of our lives. As cliché as it may sound, it had been true. We were not only building houses, but we were building lives.
Internationally or domestically, conflict resolution or human rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to think that there are many methods of getting involved and give back to the global community. But these dilemmas exist not to create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you begin to begin making positive contributions equally so long when you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this is among the toughest decisions to produce. I picked the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot get rid of poverty housing, that directed me into the answer I was looking for. Perhaps 1 person can’t change the entire world, however, the planet can surely change for a single person. And it’s this domino effect, which should spread throughout the globe we can, collectively, reach the unthinkable and create a world that reflects the warmth of humankind in the place of its own indifference.
