The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat when sitting in the colour. I used ton’t mind the heat so much, I was just happy to be out. However it did slow the rate of the progress at the construction website. It had been grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, laying cubes, and bending rebar, all of that I had little to no practical expertise in.
I will acknowledge that construction houses was perhaps not in my job description. When I sat there with my back against a shrub I pumped a half jar of water on my mind. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt joyful, but because I had been truly content. I recognized a gentle breeze that suddenly drifted across the scene and required my thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how did I arrive here?
Wasn’t there something more alive than routine and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if many everyone was really getting at the morning inspired by the work they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I had a change. I wanted to eventually become actively involved in something positive that would give me a feeling of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where do I register? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. However, I finally chose and started to see this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really transform the world? I wanted to find out.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat just started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long term volunteers and I had been the initial to go through the application. My official title was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I felt that this was an enormous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed on the support of volunteers. Getting started I was somewhat on edge, in the time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – I was actually enjoying office work. I participate in the evolution of materials like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous advancement of this IVP program. I even administered an onsite volunteer training plan in El Salvador. Yet the best part about my job was to work alongside other volunteers, people who were there not because that they must be but were there only because they wished to become.
So far as the volunteers have been concerned my job was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them throughout their stay. There is such a charm between the volunteers I would often go on it a step further and plan weekend excursions and after-work outings. We ended up not simply changing the lifestyles of many others, however, shifting the lives of one another.
Normally as I could I’d break out from the workplace and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of your work. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was always very receptive, helpful, and appreciative of our help. The scene was a great amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond which tied us together wasn’t that the easy notion of building a home. Only watching everyone else working, laughing, grinning, and sharing created an atmosphere so rich with emotion it made me reconsider how I recognized wealth. Your house was symbolic of more than only a place of dwelling. It represented a unity, a coming together, along with an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry together to the remainder of our lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was true. We’re not only building houses, but we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict settlement or individual rights, the surroundings – it’s disheartening to consider that there are so many methods to get involved and give back to the global community. However, these dilemmas exist to not create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you start to start making positive contributions equally so long when you make your decision to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this is among the toughest decisions to make. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Did I succeed? Definitely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I cannot eliminate poverty home, that led me to the answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 man can not change the entire world, but the world can certainly change for a single person. And it’s this domino effect, that should spread throughout the globe we can, together, reach the unthinkable and make a world that reflects the heat of mankind in the place of its indifference.
