I didn’t mind the heat, I was only glad to be outside. However it did impede the speed of our progress at the construction website. It had been grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, laying cubes, and bending rebar, most of that I had little to no practical expertise in.
I’ll admit that building houses was perhaps not in my own job description. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt much joyful, however because I had been truly happy. I welcomed a gentle breeze that suddenly drifted across the scene and required my own thoughts withit. My mind started to wonder. Just how can I get here?
Are not there something more your than regular and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if a lot of people were really waking up at the morning inspired by the job that they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I needed a switch. I desired to become consciously engaged in something positive that could provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where can I sign up? Can anyone really change the world? I wanted to learn.
Habitat simply started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long-term volunteers and that I had been the initial to experience the application. I felt this was an enormous opportunity since the company was built and existed the support of volunteers. Starting out I had been somewhat on edge, but in the time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying off ice job. I participate in the growth of substances like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I caused a taskforce for its continuous improvement of the IVP program. I even handled an on site volunteer training program at El Salvador. The greatest part in my job was really getting to work along side other volunteers, those who were there not because they must be but were there only because they wished to be.
So far as the volunteers had been concerned my role was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and support them during their stay. There was this kind of charm amongst the volunteers I would go on it a step further and plan weekend trips and after work excursions. We finished up not simply changing the lifestyles of many others, but shifting the lives of each other. Working together with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe that I could accomplish almost any job, however more importantly it gave me a more real sense of pride in to be ready to work hard at work worth doing.
Normally as I could I would break away from the workplace and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of your work. Out at the sight we would work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was always very receptive, helpful, and respectful of our help. The spectacle was a great amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond that tied us together was that the very simple notion of building a home. Just seeing every one working, laughing, grinning, and sharing generated a feeling so rich with emotion that it made me rethink the way I defined riches. Your home was emblematic of more than only a place of dwelling. It represented a motto, a coming together, and an inherent comprehension of equality that we’ll carry together for the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was true. We were not just building houses, but we were building lives.
Internationally or domestically, conflict resolution or individual rights, the environment – it’s disheartening to consider there are so many methods of getting involved and give back to the international community. But these problems exist not to create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you begin to begin making positive contributions equally so long when you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this really is among the toughest decisions to produce. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Not even close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I alone cannot do away with poverty home, that directed me into this answer I was looking for. Perhaps one person can’t change the entire world, but the planet can surely change for one person. And it has this domino effect, that if spread throughout the planet we could, together, achieve the unthinkable and create a world that reflects the warmth of mankind instead of its indifference.
