The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat whilst sitting in the color. I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was simply happy to be outside. However it did impede the speed of the progress at the construction website.
I will acknowledge that construction houses was perhaps not in my job description. When I sat there with my back against a shrub I squeezed a half bottle of water on my head. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt much more refreshed, but because I had been truly happy. I recognized a gentle breeze that unexpectedly swept round the scene and took my own thoughts withit. My mind began to wonder. How can I get here?
For many years I had the dream of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing a different culture. Are not there something more to life than routine and monotony? At times I’d often wonder if many everyone was really getting in the morning inspired by the job that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a change. I wanted to become consciously involved in something positive which will give me a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if yes where do I subscribe? However, I finally chose and began to see this fantasy once I traveled to Costa Rica to a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really transform the whole world? I desired to discover.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat just started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and that I was the 1st to go through the program. My official title was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I felt that this was an enormous opportunity since the company was built and existed the support of volunteers. Beginning I had been somewhat on edge, in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was incredible – that I was actually enjoying off ice job. I participate in the development of materials like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous improvement of this IVP program. I administered an on site volunteer training program in El Salvador. Yet the best part about my job was getting to work along with other volunteers, people who weren’t because that they must be but have there been only because they desired to be.
So far as the volunteers have been concerned my job was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and support them through the duration of their stay. There was such a charm amongst the volunteers I would take it a step further and plan weekend excursions and after work outings. We ended up not simply altering the lifestyles of many others, but shifting the lives of each other. Dealing together with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I could accomplish some task, however more importantly it gave me a more real sense of pride in being able to work hard at work worth doing.
Normally as I could I’d break out from the workplace and accept volunteers build trips to Habitat building landscapes during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see first hand the culmination of work. Out at the sight we would work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was always very receptive, helpful, and appreciative of the help. The scene was a fantastic amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. The common bond that tied us together was the easy notion of creating a home. Just seeing every one working, laughing, grinning, and sharing generated an atmosphere therefore rich with emotion that it made me rethink the way I defined riches. The house was emblematic of more than just a place of residence. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry with us to the rest of our lives. As cliché as it may sound, it had been true. We’re not just building homes, we were building resides.
Internationally or domestically, conflict resolution or human rights, the environment – it’s disheartening to believe that there are many methods of getting involved and give back to the international community. It isn’t important where you start to start making positive gifts just as long as you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this is one of the toughest decisions to create. I picked the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Not even close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone can’t get rid of poverty home, which led me to the answer I was looking for. Perhaps 1 man can’t change the entire world, however, the world can surely change for a single individual. And it has this domino effect, which should disperse throughout the planet we could, collectively, reach the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the warmth of humanity in the place of its indifference.
