building house toys – BRIO 33564 Signal House with Semaphore Train Building
The sun beat down from overhead with this kind of intensity I was breaking out in a sweat when sitting in the shade. I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was simply glad to be out. However it did impede the speed of the progress at the construction site. It was grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, laying blocks, and bending rebar, all which I had little to no practical knowledge in.
I will acknowledge that building houses was perhaps not in my own job description. A grin crossed my face, not because I felt much joyful, however because I was truly content. I recognized a gentle breeze that suddenly drifted across the landscape and took my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. How can I get here?
For several years that I had the dream of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing another culture. Are not there something more alive than routine and monotony? Occasionally I would often wonder if many people were really getting at the morning inspired by the work that they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I had a switch. I desired to become actively engaged with something positive that would provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that also exist, and if yes where can I register? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. But, I finally chose and began to realize this fantasy when I traveled to Costa Rica in a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really transform the whole world? I needed to discover.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and activity. Habitat only started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long term volunteers and I was the initial to experience the app. I believed this was an enormous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the support of volunteers. Getting started I had been a bit on edge, but in the time I found my groove over the Habitat frame. It was unbelievable – I was actually enjoying office job. I took part in the evolution of substances such as a volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous improvement of this IVP program. I administered an on site volunteer training program at El Salvador. Yet the best part in my job was getting to work along side other volunteers, those who weren’t because they must be but have there been simply because they desired to become.
As far as the volunteers had been concerned, my job was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and support them throughout their stay. There was this kind of charisma amongst the volunteers I would take it a step further and plan weekend excursions and after work outings. We wound up not simply altering the lifestyles of many others, however, changing the lifestyles of eachother. Dealing together with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I could accomplish some endeavor, but more importantly it gave me a more real sense of fulfillment in to be able to perform hard at work worth doing.
Normally as I could I would break away from the office and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of your job. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was always very receptive, helpful, and respectful of our help. The scene was a wonderful amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond that tied us together wasn’t that the simple notion of developing a home. Only watching everyone working, laughing, grinning, and discussing generated a feeling therefore rich with emotion that I made me rethink the way I defined wealth. The home was emblematic of more than just a place of dwelling. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, and also an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry with us to the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was authentic. We’re not just building houses, but we were building lives.
Internationally or domestically, conflict settlement or individual rights, the surroundings – it’s disheartening to believe there are so many ways to get involved and give back to the international community. But these problems exist not to create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you start to get started making positive contributions equally so long when you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this really is one of the toughest decisions to create. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Not even close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I alone can’t eliminate poverty home, which directed me into this answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 man can not change the planet, however, the world can certainly change for one individual. And it has this domino effect, that if disperse throughout the planet we could, together, reach the unthinkable and create a world that reflects the heat of humankind in the place of its own indifference.
