The sun beat down from overhead with this kind of intensity I was breaking out in a sweat whilst sitting in the colour. I used ton’t mind the heat, I was just glad to be outside. However it did impede the rate of the progress at the construction website. It was grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, putting cubes, and bending rebar, most which I had little to no practical expertise in.

I will acknowledge that construction houses was perhaps not in my own job description. As I sat there with my back against a shrub I pumped a half bottle of cool water on my mind. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt more refreshed, but because I was truly pleased. I welcomed a gentle breeze that unexpectedly drifted across the landscape and required my own thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. Just how can I arrive here?

Wasn’t there something more to life than routine and monotony? Sometimes I’d often wonder if most everyone was really getting up in the morning inspired by the job they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I wanted to become consciously engaged with something positive which would provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where can I subscribe? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. However, I finally took the initiative and started to realize this fantasy once I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really change the world? I wanted to discover.

Habitat just started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long-term volunteers and that I was the initial to go through the program. My official name was the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I felt that this is an enormous opportunity since the organization was constructed and existed the support of volunteers. Getting started I was somewhat on edge, in the time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was incredible – that I was actually enjoying office job. I took part in the growth of materials like an volunteer manual, interview guides, and test forms. I worked with a task force for the continuous advancement of this IVP program. I administered an onsite volunteer training regime at El Salvador. Yet the best part about my job was getting to work alongside other volunteers, people who weren’t because they must function but have there been only because they desired to become.

As far as the volunteers were concerned my role was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and support them during their stay. There is this type of charm between the volunteers I’d often go on it a step further and plan weekend excursions and after work outings. We finished up not simply changing the lives of many others, however, shifting the lives of one another.

As often as I could I’d break away from the workplace and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see firsthand the culmination of one’s job. Out at the sight we would work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was always very receptive, helpful, and appreciative of our help. The spectacle was a fantastic amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond that tied us together wasn’t that the simple thought of creating a home. Only seeing everyone else working, laughing, smiling, and discussing generated a feeling so rich with emotion it made me rethink how I defined wealth. The house was emblematic greater than just a place of dwelling. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent comprehension of equality which we’ll carry with us for the rest of our lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was authentic. We were not only building homes, we were building resides.

Internationally or domestically, conflict resolution or human rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to consider there are so many methods to get involved and give back to the international community. However, these dilemmas exist not to create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you start to begin making positive gifts equally for as long as you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this is among the toughest decisions to make. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Not even close. Did I succeed? Definitely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I cannot get rid of poverty housing, that led me to the answer I was looking for. Perhaps one man can not change the world, but the entire world can definitely change for one person. And it’s this domino effect, that if disperse across the planet we could, together, achieve the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the warmth of humanity in the place of its own indifference.
