I didn’t mind the heat, I was only happy to be outside. Yet it did impede the rate of the progress at the construction website.
I will acknowledge that construction houses was perhaps not in my own job description. As I sat there with my back against a shrub I squeezed a half jar of water on my head. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt more refreshed, but because I was truly content. I welcomed a gentle breeze that suddenly swept across the landscape and took my thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. How can I get here?
Are not there something more your than regular and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if most people were really getting at the morning motivated by the work they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I wanted to eventually become actively involved with something positive which would give me a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if yes where do I subscribe? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. However, I finally chose and started to see this dream once I traveled to Costa Rica in a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really change the whole world? I needed to find out.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat just started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and that I was the 1st to experience the app. My official name was the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed that this is an enormous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the aid of volunteers. Starting out I was somewhat on edge, in the time I found my groove over the Habitat frame. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying off ice job. I participate in the evolution of materials such as an volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a task force for its continuous improvement of the IVP program. I even administered an on-site volunteer training plan at El Salvador. The best part about my job was having to work alongside other volunteers, those who were there not because they had to function but have there been only because they wished to be.
So far as the volunteers were concerned my role was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, administer orientations, and support them through the duration of their stay. There is this type of charisma amongst the volunteers I would often take it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after work outings. We finished up not just altering the lifestyles of others, however, shifting the lives of one another. Dealing with Habitat gave me the confidence to feel I could accomplish almost any endeavor, but more importantly it gave me a genuine sense of pride in being ready to perform hard at work worth doing.
As often as I could I would break away from the office and accept volunteers build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of one’s work. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was always very receptive, helpful, and respectful of our help. The spectacle was a great amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. The common bond which tied us together was that the easy notion of creating a home. Only watching everyone working, laughing, smiling, and sharing generated an atmosphere therefore rich with emotion that I made me reconsider how I defined riches. Your house was symbolic greater than only a place of residence. It represented a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry together to the rest of our lives. As cliché as it may sound, it had been authentic. We were not only building homes, we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict resolution or individual rights, the surroundings – it’s disheartening to think that there are many methods of getting involved and give back to the global community. It isn’t important where you begin to get started making positive gifts just as long as you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this is one of the toughest decisions to create. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot eliminate poverty home, which directed me into this answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 man can’t change the world, however, the planet can definitely change for one individual. And it’s this domino effect, which should disperse across the planet we could, together, reach the unthinkable and create a world that reflects the heat of humanity instead of its indifference.
