I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was only glad to be out. But, it did slow the rate of the progress at the construction site.
I’ll admit that construction houses was perhaps not in my job description. When I sat there with my back against a shrub I pumped a half bottle of cool water over my mind. A smile crossed my head, not because I felt joyful, however because I had been truly happy. I recognized a gentle breeze which unexpectedly swept across the landscape and took my thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how did I get here?
For several years I had the dream of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing another culture. Are not there something more your than routine and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if many people were really getting up in the morning inspired by the work that they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I desired to eventually become actively engaged in something positive which would provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where can I register? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Can one person really change the world? I needed to learn.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and activity. Habitat just started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and I was the very first to go through the app. I believed that this was a tremendous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the support of volunteers. Starting out I was a bit on edge, but in due time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying off ice work. I participate in the growth of substances like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and evaluation forms. I caused a task force for its continuous improvement of this IVP program. I even handled an on-site volunteer training regime at El Salvador. The best part about my job was having to work along with other volunteers, those who weren’t because that they must be but have there been only because they wished to become.
So far as the volunteers had been concerned, my job was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, then administer orientations, and encourage them during their stay. There was this kind of charm amongst the volunteers I would take it a step further and plan weekend trips and after work excursions. We wound up not just altering the lives of many others, but changing the lifestyles of one another.
As often as I could I would break away from the office and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of job. Out at the sight we would work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was consistently very receptive, helpful, and respectful of the help. The spectacle was a amazing amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond which tied us together wasn’t that the very simple notion of building a home. Just seeing everyone working, laughing, grinning, and discussing created a feeling so rich with emotion that I made me reconsider the way I recognized riches. The home was symbolic greater than only a place of dwelling. It represented a motto, a coming together, and an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry together to the rest of our lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was true. We’re not only building homes, we were building resides.
Internationally or domestically, conflict settlement or human rights, the environment – it’s disheartening to consider there are many ways of getting involved and give back to the global community. It doesn’t matter where you start to begin making positive contributions equally so long as you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this is among the toughest decisions to make. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not really close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I cannot get rid of poverty housing, that led me into this answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 person can’t change the planet, however, the world can certainly change for a single person. And it has this domino effect, which if disperse throughout the globe we can, collectively, reach the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the warmth of mankind in the place of its indifference.
