The sun beat down from overhead with this kind of intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat while sitting in the shade. I used ton’t mind the heat so much, I was only glad to be out. But, it did impede the rate of our progress at the construction site.

I’ll admit that building houses was not in my own job description. A smile crossed my head, not because I felt much refreshed, but because I had been truly content. I recognized a gentle breeze that suddenly drifted round the scene and took my own thoughts withit. My mind started to wonder. How did I get here?

Wasn’t there something more alive than routine and monotony? Sometimes I’d often wonder if a lot of people were really waking up in the morning inspired by the job that they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I needed a switch. I desired to eventually become actively involved with something positive that will give me a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if yes where do I subscribe? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Can anyone really change the world? I desired to discover.

Habitat simply started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and I was the 1st to experience the program. My official title was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I felt that this is a tremendous opportunity since the company was built and existed the support of volunteers. Starting out I had been a bit on edge, in the time I found my groove within the Habitat frame. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying office job. I participate in the growth of materials like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I caused a task force for its continuous improvement of the IVP program. I even administered an on site volunteer training regime in El Salvador. The best part in my job was having to work along side other volunteers, people who weren’t because that they had to be but were there simply because they wanted to be.

As far as the volunteers had been concerned, my job was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and encourage them during their stay. There is such a charm between the volunteers I would simply take it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after-work excursions. We finished up not simply altering the lives of many others, but shifting the lifestyles of each other. Dealing with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe that I can accomplish almost any task, however more importantly it gave me a more real sense of satisfaction in to be able to perform hard at work worth doing.

As often as I could I would break away from the workplace and take volunteers build trips to Habitat building landscapes during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see first hand the culmination of one’s job. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was consistently very receptive, helpful, and appreciative of the help. The scene was a great amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the common bond that tied us together was that the very simple thought of creating a home. Just seeing everybody else working, laughing, grinning, and sharing generated a feeling therefore rich with emotion that I made me rethink how I recognized riches. Your home was emblematic of more than only a place of residence. It represented a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry together to the remainder of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was authentic. We were not only building houses, but we were building resides.

Internationally or domestically, conflict settlement or individual rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to believe that there are many methods of getting involved and give back to the global community. However, these problems exist not to create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you start to begin making positive gifts just for as long as you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this really is one of the toughest decisions to make. Can I eradicate poverty housing? Not even close. Did I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I can’t eliminate poverty home, that directed me into the answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 person can’t change the planet, however, the entire world can definitely change for one person. And it’s this domino effect, which should spread throughout the globe we can, collectively, achieve the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the heat of humankind as an alternative of its indifference.
