The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat whilst sitting in the color. I used ton’t mind the heat, I was simply happy to be outside. But, it did impede the speed of our progress at the construction site.

I’ll admit that building houses was perhaps not in my own job description. A smile crossed my head, not because I felt more refreshed, however because I was truly happy. I recognized a gentle breeze which suddenly drifted across the landscape and took my thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. How can I get here?

For many years that I had the fantasy of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing a different culture. Are not there something more alive than routine and monotony? Sometimes I’d often wonder if a lot of people were really waking up at the morning inspired by the job that they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I needed a change. I desired to become consciously engaged in something positive that would provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where do I register? However, I finally chose and began to see this fantasy once I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really change the world? I wanted to find out.

Habitat simply started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and I had been the 1st to go through the app. I felt this is an enormous opportunity since the organization was built and existed on the aid of volunteers. Starting out I had been somewhat on edge, but in the time I found my groove over the Habitat frame. It was incredible – that I was actually enjoying off ice job. I took part in the development of substances such as a volunteer manual, interview guides, and test forms. I worked with a taskforce for the continuous improvement of the IVP program. I handled an onsite volunteer training program at El Salvador. The best part in my job was to work along with other volunteers, those who weren’t because that they had to function but have there been simply because they wished to be.

As far as the volunteers had been concerned, my job was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and support them throughout their stay. There is such a charisma between the volunteers I would simply take it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after work excursions. We finished up not simply altering the lifestyles of others, but changing the lifestyles of eachother.

Normally as I could I would break away from the workplace and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights during Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see firsthand the culmination of one’s work. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was always very receptive, helpful, and respectful of the help. The spectacle was a wonderful amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond which tied us together was the very simple thought of creating a home. Only seeing everybody else working, laughing, grinning, and sharing created an atmosphere so rich with emotion that it made me rethink how I defined riches. Your home was symbolic of more than just a place of dwelling. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and an inherent comprehension of equality which we’ll carry together for the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was authentic. We were not just building homes, we were building resides.

Internationally or domestically, conflict settlement or human rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to believe there are so many ways of getting involved and give back to the international community. It isn’t important where you start to begin making positive gifts equally as long when you make your decision to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this is one of the toughest decisions to produce. I picked the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Can I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot do away with poverty home, that led me to this answer I was looking for. Perhaps 1 person can not change the world, however, the entire world can certainly change for one person. And it’s this domino effect, which should spread throughout the globe we can, collectively, reach the unthinkable and create a world that reflects the heat of mankind instead of its indifference.
