The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat whilst sitting in the color. I didn’t mind the heat, I was simply glad to be out. However it did slow the speed of the progress at the construction website. It was grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, putting blocks, and bending rebar, all that I had little to no working knowledge in.

I’ll admit that construction houses was perhaps not in my own job description. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt refreshed, however because I was truly satisfied. I welcomed a gentle breeze which unexpectedly swept across the scene and took my own thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. How can I get here?

Wasn’t there something more to life than routine and monotony? Occasionally I’d often wonder if a lot of people were really waking up at the morning inspired by the job they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I wanted to become actively engaged in something positive which would provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if yes where can I sign up? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. However, I finally took the initiative and began to see this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really change the whole world? I desired to find out.

Habitat simply started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and that I had been the very first to experience the application. My official name was the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed this was an enormous opportunity since the organization was constructed and existed on the support of volunteers. Getting started I had been somewhat on edge, in the time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying office work. I took part in the growth of substances such as an volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I caused a task force for its continuous advancement of the IVP program. I administered an on site volunteer training regime in El Salvador. The best part about my job was to work along with other volunteers, people who weren’t because that they must be but were there only because they wanted to become.

So far as the volunteers had been concerned, my role was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them during their stay. There is such a charisma between the volunteers I would often take it a step further and plan weekend excursions and after work excursions. We wound up not just changing the lifestyles of many others, but shifting the lives of one another. Working with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I can accomplish virtually any task, but more importantly it gave me a real sense of fulfillment in being ready to work hard at work worth doing.

As often as I could I’d break away from the office and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of your work. Out at the sight we would work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was always very open-minded, friendly, and appreciative of the help. The scene was a great amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. The frequent bond that tied us together was the very simple thought of building a home. Just watching everybody else working, laughing, grinning, and discussing generated an atmosphere therefore rich with emotion that I made me rethink the way I recognized riches. Your home was symbolic of more than only a place of dwelling. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent comprehension of equality which we’ll carry with us for the rest of our lives. As cliché as it may sound, it had been authentic. We were not just building houses, but we were building resides.

Internationally or conflict resolution or individual rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to believe that there are many ways of getting involved and give back to the global community. However, these problems exist not to create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you begin to start making positive gifts just as long as you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this really is among the toughest decisions to make. I picked the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not really close. Did I succeed? Definitely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I alone cannot do away with poverty home, which led me to this answer I was looking for. Perhaps one person can not change the planet, however, the world can certainly change for one individual. And it’s this domino effect, which if spread across the planet we could, together, achieve the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the warmth of humanity as an alternative of its indifference.
