I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was just glad to be outside. However, it did impede the rate of our progress at the construction site.
I will acknowledge that building houses was perhaps not in my job description. When I sat there with my back against a shrub I squeezed a half bottle of water over my mind. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt much joyful, but because I was truly happy. I recognized a gentle breeze which unexpectedly swept across the landscape and took my own thoughts withit. My mind started to wonder. Just how can I arrive here?
Wasn’t there something more alive than routine and monotony? Occasionally I would often wonder if a lot of people were really getting in the morning motivated by the job they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I had a change. I wanted to become consciously involved in something positive that will provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that exist, and if yes where do I subscribe? However, I finally took the initiative and started to realize this fantasy once I traveled to Costa Rica to a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really transform the world? I needed to discover.
Habitat simply started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and I was the 1st to experience the application. My official name was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I felt this is a tremendous opportunity since the company was built and existed the support of volunteers. Starting out I had been a bit on edge, but in the time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was incredible – that I was actually enjoying off ice work. I participate in the evolution of substances like a volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I caused a task force for the continuous advancement of this IVP program. I even handled an on-site volunteer training regime at El Salvador. Yet the best part about my job was getting to work along side other volunteers, those who were there not because that they had to be but have there been simply because they wanted to become.
As far as the volunteers had been concerned my job was to coordinate home and coming logistics, then administer orientations, and encourage them during their stay. There was this type of charisma amongst the volunteers I would often simply take it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after-work excursions. We wound up not just altering the lifestyles of others, but changing the lifestyles of each other.
As often as I could I’d break out from the workplace and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of your job. Out at the sight we would work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was consistently very receptive, helpful, and appreciative of the help. The spectacle was a great amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the common bond which tied us together was the easy thought of building a home. Only watching everybody working, laughing, grinning, and discussing created a feeling therefore rich with emotion it made me reconsider how I defined riches. The house was symbolic of more than only a place of dwelling. It represented a unity, a coming together, and an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry together to the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was authentic. We were not just building homes, we were building resides.
Internationally or domestically, conflict resolution or human rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to think there are many methods of getting involved and give back to the global community. But these problems exist not to create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you start to start making positive gifts equally so long when you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this really is one of the toughest decisions to make. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Not really close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot get rid of poverty housing, which directed me to this answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 person can not change the entire world, however, the planet can definitely change for a single individual. And it’s this domino effect, which should disperse throughout the planet we could, together, achieve the unthinkable and make a world that reflects the warmth of mankind in the place of its indifference.
