I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was simply glad to be outside. However it did impede the rate of our progress at the construction website. It was grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, putting blocks, and bending rebar, most of which I had little to no working expertise in.

I will acknowledge that building houses was not in my own job description. As I sat there with my back against a shrub I squeezed a half bottle of water on my head. A smile crossed my head, not because I felt much refreshed, but because I was truly satisfied. I welcomed a gentle breeze that suddenly swept round the scene and required my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how can I arrive here?

Are not there something more alive than regular and monotony? Sometimes I’d often wonder if most people were really getting up at the morning motivated by the job they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I needed a switch. I wanted to become consciously involved with something positive that could give me a sense of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where can I sign up? Can anyone really transform the world? I desired to learn.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat just started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long term volunteers and I had been the initial to go through the program. I believed that this is a tremendous opportunity since the organization was constructed and existed on the support of volunteers. Starting out I was a bit on edge, in the time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying office work. I took part in the development of materials like a volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a task force for its continuous improvement of the IVP program. I even handled an onsite volunteer training plan in El Salvador. The greatest part in my job was to work along with other volunteers, those who weren’t because they must function but were there simply because they desired to become.

As far as the volunteers had been concerned my job was to coordinate home and coming logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them through the duration of their stay. There was this kind of charm amongst the volunteers I’d often simply take it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after work excursions. We finished up not just altering the lifestyles of others, but shifting the lifestyles of each other. Dealing with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I can accomplish almost any job, but more importantly it gave me a real sense of fulfillment in to be ready to work hard at work worth doing.

As often as I could I would break away from the workplace and accept volunteers build trips to Habitat building landscapes during Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of work. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was always very receptive, helpful, and appreciative of the help. The spectacle was a amazing amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. The frequent bond which tied us together was the very simple notion of developing a home. Only seeing everyone working, laughing, smiling, and discussing generated a feeling so rich with emotion that it made me rethink how I recognized riches. Your home was symbolic of more than only a place of dwelling. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, and also an inherent comprehension of equality which we’ll carry with us to the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was true. We were not only building houses, but we were building resides.

Internationally or conflict settlement or human rights, the environment – it’s disheartening to consider that there are so many ways of getting involved and give back to the global community. However, these issues exist not to create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you start to begin making positive gifts equally so long as you make your decision to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this is one of the toughest decisions to make. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot eliminate poverty housing, that directed me into this answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 man can not change the world, but the entire world can definitely change for a single individual. And it’s this domino effect, which if spread throughout the globe we can, together, achieve the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the heat of humankind in the place of its indifference.
