I used ton’t mind the heat, I was just glad to be outside. Yet, it did impede the speed of the progress at the construction website.

I will acknowledge that construction houses was perhaps not in my own job description. When I sat there with my back against a shrub I poured a half jar of cool water over my head. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt much refreshed, but because I was truly pleased. I welcomed a gentle breeze which suddenly swept round the scene and required my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how can I arrive here?

For many years I had the dream of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing another culture. Wasn’t there something more to life than routine and monotony? At times I would often wonder if many people were really getting in the morning motivated by the work they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I needed a switch. I wanted to become actively involved with something positive that will provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that even exist, and if yes where can I register? Can one person really change the world? I needed to find out.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat only started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and that I had been the very first to experience the application. My official name was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed this was a tremendous opportunity since the organization was constructed and existed the aid of volunteers. Beginning I had been somewhat on edge, but in due time I found my groove over the Habitat frame. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying office work. I took part in the growth of substances like a volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a task force for its continuous improvement of this IVP program. I handled an on-site volunteer training regime in El Salvador. The best part about my job was having to work along side other volunteers, those who were there not because that they must be but were there only because they wanted to become.

As far as the volunteers were concerned, my job was to coordinate home and coming logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them through the duration of their stay. There was this type of charm between the volunteers I would go on it a step further and plan weekend trips and after work outings. We finished up not simply changing the lives of many others, but shifting the lives of each other. Dealing with Habitat gave me the confidence to feel I could accomplish any endeavor, but more importantly it gave me a genuine sense of fulfillment in being ready to perform hard at work worth doing.

As often as I could I’d break out from the office and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of one’s job. Out at the sight we would work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was always very receptive, helpful, and respectful of our help. The scene was a fantastic amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. The common bond that tied us together wasn’t that the easy notion of creating a home. Just seeing everybody else working, laughing, grinning, and sharing generated a feeling therefore rich with emotion that it made me reconsider the way I recognized wealth. Your home was emblematic greater than just a place of dwelling. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, along with an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry together to the remainder of our lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was true. We were not just building houses, but we were building lives.

Internationally or conflict resolution or individual rights, the surroundings – it’s disheartening to believe there are many methods of getting involved and give back to the global community. It isn’t important where you start to start making positive gifts just so long when you make your decision to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this really is one of the toughest decisions to create. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Not really close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone cannot eliminate poverty home, which led me to the answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 person can not change the world, but the world can definitely change for one individual. And it’s this domino effect, that if disperse throughout the planet we could, together, reach the unthinkable and make a world that reflects the warmth of humanity in the place of its indifference.
