The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I was breaking out in a sweat when sitting in the color. I used ton’t mind the heat, I was simply happy to be out. But, it did slow the rate of the progress at the construction website.

I will acknowledge that building houses was not in my job description. A grin crossed my face, not because I felt much more joyful, however because I had been truly pleased. I welcomed a gentle breeze which suddenly swept round the scene and required my thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. How did I arrive here?

Are not there something more to life than routine and monotony? Occasionally I’d often wonder if many people were really getting in the morning inspired by the work that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I needed a change. I needed to eventually become actively engaged in something positive that will give me a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where can I subscribe? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Can anyone really change the world? I wanted to learn.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat only started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long-term volunteers and I had been the 1st to go through the program. My official name was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I felt that this was a tremendous opportunity since the company was built and existed on the aid of volunteers. Beginning I was a bit on edge, in the time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying off ice work. I took part in the development of materials like an volunteer manual, meeting guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous advancement of the IVP program. I even administered an on-site volunteer training program in El Salvador. The greatest part about my job was really getting to work along side other volunteers, those who were there not because they must function but have there been only because they wanted to become.

So far as the volunteers had been concerned, my role was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and support them during their stay. There is such a charisma between the volunteers I’d often go on it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after-work excursions. We ended up not simply changing the lives of others, however, shifting the lifestyles of one another. Working together with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I can accomplish virtually any endeavor, but more importantly it gave me a more genuine sense of satisfaction in to be able to work hard at work worth doing.

Normally as I could I would break away from the workplace and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights during Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of one’s job. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was always very receptive, helpful, and appreciative of our help. The spectacle was a great amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. The frequent bond which tied us together wasn’t the very simple thought of creating a home. Just seeing everybody working, laughing, smiling, and discussing generated an atmosphere so rich with emotion that it made me rethink the way I recognized wealth. Your house was symbolic of more than only a place of dwelling. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and an inherent comprehension of equality which we’ll carry together for the rest of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was true. We’re not just building homes, we were building resides.

Internationally or conflict resolution or human rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to think there are so many methods to get involved and give back to the international community. However, these dilemmas exist not to create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you begin to start making positive gifts equally for as long as you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this really is among the toughest decisions to create. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Not even close. Can I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot do away with poverty housing, that directed me to the answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 man can’t change the entire world, however, the planet can certainly change for a single individual. And it has this domino effect, which should disperse throughout the globe we can, together, achieve the unthinkable and make a world that reflects the warmth of humankind in the place of its indifference.
