I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was only happy to be outside. Yet it did slow the rate of the progress at the construction site. It had been grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, putting cubes, and bending rebar, all of which I had little to no working knowledge in.

I will acknowledge that construction houses was perhaps not in my own job description. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt much joyful, however because I had been truly content. I recognized a gentle breeze that suddenly swept round the landscape and required my thoughts withit. My mind started to wonder. How can I get here?

Are not there something more alive than routine and monotony? Occasionally I’d often wonder if a lot of people were really getting up at the morning motivated by the work they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I had a switch. I needed to become consciously engaged in something positive which would give me a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where can I register? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. But, I finally chose and began to realize this dream once I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really transform the world? I desired to discover.

Habitat just started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and I had been the initial to experience the application. My official title was the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed that this is an enormous opportunity since the company was built and existed the aid of volunteers. Beginning I had been a bit on edge, in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying office job. I took part in the evolution of materials like a volunteer manual, meeting guides, and evaluation forms. I caused a task force for the continuous improvement of the IVP program. I handled an on site volunteer training program at El Salvador. Yet the greatest part in my job was really getting to work along side other volunteers, people who weren’t because that they must be but have there been only because they desired to become.

So far as the volunteers had been concerned, my role was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and encourage them through the duration of their stay. There was such a charm between the volunteers I would often take it a step further and plan weekend trips and after-work outings. We wound up not simply altering the lives of others, but shifting the lifestyles of one another. Working with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe that I can accomplish virtually any task, but more importantly it gave me a genuine sense of satisfaction in being ready to work hard at work worth doing.

Normally as I could I would break out from the office and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of work. Out at the sight we would work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The scene was a wonderful amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. Yet the frequent bond which tied us together wasn’t that the easy thought of developing a home. Only seeing everybody working, laughing, smiling, and discussing generated a feeling therefore rich with emotion that I made me reconsider how I recognized wealth. The house was emblematic greater than only a place of residence. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry together for the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was true. We’re not just building homes, we were building resides.

Internationally or domestically, conflict settlement or individual rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to consider that there are many methods of getting involved and give back to the global community. It doesn’t matter where you begin to start making positive contributions just for as long as you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this really is among the toughest decisions to create. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eradicate poverty housing? Not really close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I can’t get rid of poverty home, which led me to the answer I was looking for. Perhaps 1 person can not change the world, however, the world can definitely change for one individual. And it’s this domino effect, which should spread across the planet we could, together, reach the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the heat of humankind as an alternative of its own indifference.
