I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was just glad to be out. Yet, it did impede the speed of the progress at the construction website.

I will acknowledge that building houses was not in my own job description. When I sat there with my back against a shrub I poured a half bottle of water on my mind. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt much joyful, but because I was truly content. I recognized a gentle breeze that unexpectedly drifted across the landscape and took my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. How did I arrive here?

Are not there something more to life than regular and monotony? Occasionally I’d often wonder if a lot of people were really waking up at the morning motivated by the job that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I had a switch. I wanted to eventually become consciously engaged with something positive which could provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that even exist, and if yes where do I register? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. But, I finally chose and began to realize this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really transform the world? I desired to learn.

Habitat simply started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long-term volunteers and I was the 1st to experience the program. My official title was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed this is a tremendous opportunity since the organization was constructed and existed on the support of volunteers. Getting started I was a bit on edge, but in the time I found my groove over the Habitat frame. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying off ice job. I took part in the evolution of materials such as a volunteer manual, meeting guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a task force for the continuous improvement of this IVP program. I even administered an on-site volunteer training regime in El Salvador. The best part about my job was to work alongside other volunteers, people who were there not because they must be but have there been simply because they wished to be.

As far as the volunteers had been concerned my job was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and encourage them throughout their stay. There was such a charm between the volunteers I would often take it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after-work outings. We finished up not just changing the lifestyles of others, but shifting the lives of eachother. Working together with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe that I can accomplish some job, however more importantly it gave me a genuine sense of fulfillment in to be able to perform hard at work worth doing.

Normally as I could I’d break out from the workplace and take volunteers build trips to Habitat building landscapes throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of your job. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The spectacle was a fantastic amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the common bond that tied us together was the easy notion of developing a home. Only seeing everybody else working, laughing, smiling, and discussing created a feeling so rich with emotion it made me rethink the way I recognized wealth. The house was symbolic greater than only a place of residence. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, and an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry with us to the rest of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been authentic. We’re not just building houses, but we were building lives.

Internationally or conflict resolution or individual rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to consider there are so many methods of getting involved and give back to the global community. It doesn’t matter where you start to get started making positive contributions just so long when you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this really is one of the toughest decisions to produce. I chose the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Not even close. Did I succeed? Definitely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I cannot do away with poverty home, which directed me into the answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 person can’t change the world, however, the planet can certainly change for a single person. And it has this domino effect, that should disperse across the planet we could, collectively, achieve the unthinkable and make a world that reflects the heat of humanity as an alternative of its own indifference.
