The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I was breaking out in a sweat when sitting in the color. I used ton’t mind the heat, I was simply glad to be out. Yet it did impede the speed of the progress at the construction website. It had been grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, laying cubes, and bending rebar, all of which I had little to no working expertise in.
I will acknowledge that construction houses was perhaps not in my own job description. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt refreshed, but because I was truly content. I recognized a gentle breeze which unexpectedly swept round the landscape and required my own thoughts withit. My mind started to wonder. How can I arrive here?
Wasn’t there something more alive than routine and monotony? At times I’d often wonder if a lot of people were really waking up at the morning motivated by the job they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a change. I needed to become consciously engaged with something positive that could provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that also exist, and if yes where do I sign up? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Can anyone really transform the world? I desired to find out.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat just started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and I had been the initial to experience the app. I felt this is a tremendous opportunity since the company was built and existed the aid of volunteers. Getting started I had been a bit on edge, but in due time I found my groove within the Habitat frame. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying off ice job. I participate in the creation of substances such as a volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I caused a taskforce for its continuous improvement of this IVP program. I handled an onsite volunteer training program in El Salvador. The best part about my job was really getting to work along with other volunteers, people who were there not because that they had to be but were there only because they wished to become.
As far as the volunteers have been concerned, my role was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them throughout their stay. There is such a charm amongst the volunteers I would take it a step further and plan weekend trips and after work outings. We ended up not just altering the lifestyles of many others, however, changing the lifestyles of each other.
Normally as I could I would break away from the workplace and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of work. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was always very open-minded, friendly, and appreciative of the help. The spectacle was a great amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. The common bond which tied us together wasn’t that the very simple thought of building a home. Only watching every one working, laughing, grinning, and discussing created a feeling so rich with emotion that it made me reconsider how I recognized riches. Your home was emblematic greater than just a place of dwelling. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, along with an inherent comprehension of equality that we’ll carry together to the remainder of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was authentic. We’re not only building houses, but we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict resolution or individual rights, the environment – it’s disheartening to consider there are so many ways of getting involved and give back to the international community. However, these issues exist to not create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you start to get started making positive gifts equally as long as you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this is among the toughest decisions to make. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not really close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I cannot get rid of poverty home, which directed me into the answer I was looking for. Perhaps one man can not change the planet, however, the world can surely change for one person. And it has this domino effect, which if disperse across the globe we can, collectively, achieve the unthinkable and create a world that reflects the heat of humanity instead of its indifference.
