The sun beat down from overhead with this kind of intensity I was breaking out in a sweat while sitting in the color. I didn’t mind the heat, I was just glad to be out. Yet, it did impede the speed of our progress at the construction website. It had been grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, laying cubes, and bending rebar, all of which I had little to no working experience in.
I’ll admit that construction houses was not in my job description. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt joyful, however because I was truly happy. I recognized a gentle breeze which unexpectedly drifted round the scene and required my own thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. Just how did I arrive here?
Are not there something more your than regular and monotony? At times I’d often wonder if many people were really waking at the morning inspired by the job they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I wanted to become consciously engaged with something positive that could provide me with a sense of purpose. Does that also exist, and if so where can I sign up? Can anyone really transform the world? I desired to learn.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat just started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and that I was the initial to experience the program. My official name was the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I felt that this was an enormous opportunity since the company was built and existed the aid of volunteers. Beginning I had been somewhat on edge, but in the time I found my groove over the Habitat frame. It was unbelievable – I was actually enjoying office work. I participate in the evolution of substances such as an volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I caused a taskforce for its continuous advancement of this IVP program. I administered an onsite volunteer training program at El Salvador. The greatest part in my job was getting to work alongside other volunteers, people who weren’t because that they had to be but were there only because they desired to become.
As far as the volunteers have been concerned, my role was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and support them throughout their stay. There is this type of charisma between the volunteers I’d go on it a step further and plan weekend trips and after-work outings. We ended up not simply changing the lifestyles of others, but shifting the lifestyles of each other. Working together with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe I could accomplish some task, however more importantly it gave me a genuine sense of satisfaction in being able to work hard at work worth doing.
As often as I could I would break away from the workplace and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see first hand the culmination of one’s work. Out at the sight we would work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was always very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The spectacle was a fantastic amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond that tied us together wasn’t that the simple notion of creating a home. Only watching every one working, laughing, grinning, and discussing generated a feeling so rich with emotion that it made me rethink how I defined wealth. The house was emblematic of more than only a place of dwelling. It represented a motto, a coming together, and an inherent comprehension of equality that we’ll carry together to the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it had been authentic. We were not just building houses, but we were building lives.
Internationally or conflict resolution or human rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to consider that there are many ways of getting involved and give back to the international community. But these problems exist to not create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you start to get started making positive contributions equally for as long as you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this is among the toughest decisions to produce. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not really close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone cannot do away with poverty housing, which led me to the answer I was looking for. Perhaps 1 person can’t change the planet, but the planet can surely change for one person. And it’s this domino effect, which should spread across the globe we can, collectively, reach the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the heat of humankind as an alternative of its indifference.
