The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I was breaking out in a sweat whilst sitting in the color. I didn’t mind the heat, I was simply happy to be outside. However it did slow the speed of our progress at the construction website.

I’ll admit that building houses was perhaps not in my own job description. When I sat there with my back against a tree I poured a half bottle of water on my head. A grin crossed my face, not because I felt much more refreshed, but because I was truly content. I recognized a gentle breeze which unexpectedly swept round the scene and required my thoughts withit. My mind started to wonder. Just how did I arrive here?

For many years that I had the fantasy of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing a different culture. Wasn’t there something more to life than regular and monotony? Sometimes I’d often wonder if many everyone was really waking up in the morning inspired by the work that they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I had a change. I needed to eventually become consciously engaged with something positive which would provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where do I register? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Yet, I finally chose and began to see this fantasy once I traveled to Costa Rica in a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really change the whole world? I wanted to discover.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat only started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and I had been the very first to experience the app. I felt that this was an enormous opportunity since the organization was constructed and existed on the support of volunteers. Beginning I was somewhat on edge, but in the time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying office job. I participate in the development of materials such as a volunteer manual, interview guides, and test forms. I caused a taskforce for its continuous improvement of this IVP program. I even handled an on-site volunteer training program in El Salvador. The greatest part in my job was really getting to work along side other volunteers, people who were there not because that they had to function but have there been only because they desired to be.

So far as the volunteers have been concerned my job was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, then administer orientations, and encourage them through the duration of their stay. There was this type of charm between the volunteers I’d often go on it a step further and plan weekend trips and after-work excursions. We ended up not simply changing the lives of many others, but changing the lifestyles of one another.

As often as I could I’d break away from the workplace and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat building landscapes during Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see firsthand the culmination of job. Out at the sight we would work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and appreciative of the help. The scene was a fantastic amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. The common bond which tied us together wasn’t that the simple thought of creating a home. Only watching everyone else working, laughing, smiling, and sharing generated an atmosphere so rich with emotion that I made me rethink the way I defined wealth. Your home was symbolic greater than only a place of dwelling. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, along with an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry together to the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been true. We were not just building homes, we were building lives.

Internationally or domestically, conflict settlement or individual rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to think there are so many methods of getting involved and give back to the global community. It isn’t important where you start to get started making positive contributions equally as long as you make your decision to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this really is one of the toughest decisions to produce. I picked the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Not really close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I can’t get rid of poverty housing, which directed me to this answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 person can not change the planet, but the planet can certainly change for one person. And it’s this domino effect, that should disperse across the globe we can, together, achieve the unthinkable and create a world that reflects the heat of humanity in the place of its indifference.
