building on to house plans – Road to the White House Presidential Candidate Tax Reform
I didn’t mind the heat, I was simply happy to be out. However, it did slow the rate of our progress at the construction site. It had been grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, laying blocks, and bending rebar, most that I had little to no practical expertise in.
I’ll admit that construction houses was perhaps not in my job description. A grin crossed my face, not because I felt much more refreshed, however because I had been truly satisfied. I welcomed a gentle breeze which suddenly swept across the scene and required my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. Just how did I get here?
For several years that I had the dream of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing another culture. Are not there something more alive than routine and monotony? At times I would often wonder if many everyone was really waking at the morning inspired by the work that they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I needed a change. I desired to become actively engaged in something positive that will provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where do I subscribe? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Can anyone really transform the whole world? I wanted to find out.
Habitat just started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and that I had been the initial to experience the application. My official title was the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed that this is a tremendous opportunity since the company was built and existed on the aid of volunteers. Starting out I was a bit on edge, but in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – I was actually enjoying off ice work. I took part in the creation of materials like a volunteer manual, meeting guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a task force for its continuous advancement of the IVP program. I even administered an onsite volunteer training plan at El Salvador. Yet the best part in my job was to work alongside other volunteers, those who weren’t because that they had to function but have there been only because they desired to be.
So far as the volunteers have been concerned, my job was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them through the duration of their stay. There is such a charm between the volunteers I would simply take it a step further and plan weekend excursions and after-work outings. We finished up not simply changing the lifestyles of others, however, changing the lifestyles of one another. Dealing together with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe that I can accomplish almost any endeavor, but more importantly it gave me a real sense of fulfillment in to be ready to work hard at work worth doing.
Normally as I could I’d break out from the office and take volunteers build trips to Habitat construction sights during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of work. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was consistently very receptive, helpful, and appreciative of our help. The spectacle was a fantastic amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. Yet the frequent bond that tied us together was the simple notion of developing a home. Only watching everyone else working, laughing, smiling, and sharing created an atmosphere so rich with emotion that it made me rethink the way I recognized wealth. The home was symbolic of more than just a place of residence. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry with us for the remainder of our lives. As cliché as it may sound, it had been true. We’re not just building homes, we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict settlement or individual rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to consider that there are many methods to get involved and give back to the global community. It isn’t important where you begin to start making positive gifts equally for as long when you make your choice to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this is one of the toughest decisions to create. Can I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not really close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I alone cannot do away with poverty housing, which led me to this answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 man can not change the planet, but the entire world can surely change for a single person. And it has this domino effect, which should spread throughout the planet we could, together, reach the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the heat of mankind instead of its own indifference.
