I didn’t mind the heat, I was just happy to be outside. But, it did slow the speed of the progress at the construction website. It was grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, putting cubes, and bending rebar, all that I had little to no practical knowledge in.

I’ll admit that building houses was perhaps not in my own job description. When I sat there with my back against a tree I poured a half bottle of water over my head. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt much refreshed, however because I was truly happy. I welcomed a gentle breeze that unexpectedly drifted round the scene and required my thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. Just how did I get here?

For several years that I had the fantasy of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing a different culture. Wasn’t there something more alive than routine and monotony? Sometimes I’d often wonder if most people were really waking up at the morning inspired by the job that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a change. I wanted to eventually become actively involved with something positive that could give me a feeling of purpose. Does that exist, and if yes where do I sign up? Can one person really transform the world? I wanted to learn.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat simply started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and that I was the very first to go through the application. My official title was that the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I felt that this is an enormous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed on the aid of volunteers. Starting out I was a bit on edge, in the time I found my groove over the Habitat frame. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying office job. I participate in the development of materials such as a volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I caused a task force for its continuous advancement of the IVP program. I handled an on-site volunteer training regime in El Salvador. The best part about my job was having to work along side other volunteers, people who weren’t because that they had to function but have there been simply because they wanted to become.

So far as the volunteers had been concerned, my role was to coordinate home and coming logistics, administer orientations, and support them throughout their stay. There was this type of charisma amongst the volunteers I’d often go on it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after work outings. We finished up not just changing the lives of many others, but shifting the lives of each other. Dealing with Habitat gave me the confidence to believe that I could accomplish virtually any job, however more importantly it gave me a real sense of fulfillment in to be able to work hard at work worth doing.

As often as I could I would break away from the office and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of one’s work. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and appreciative of our help. The scene was a amazing amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. Yet the frequent bond which tied us together was the easy thought of building a home. Only seeing everyone working, laughing, smiling, and sharing generated an atmosphere therefore rich with emotion that I made me reconsider how I defined riches. Your home was emblematic greater than just a place of residence. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, along with an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry together for the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was authentic. We were not only building homes, we were building lives.

Internationally or conflict resolution or individual rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to believe that there are so many methods to get involved and give back to the international community. But these problems exist to not create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you start to start making positive gifts equally for as long as you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this really is among the toughest decisions to make. I picked the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not really close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I cannot eliminate poverty housing, which led me into the answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 person can not change the world, however, the entire world can surely change for one person. And it’s this domino effect, that should disperse throughout the globe we can, together, achieve the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the heat of humankind as an alternative of its indifference.
