building your house in stages – Ready to move in or under construction
I used ton’t mind the heat, I was only happy to be outside. However it did slow the speed of our progress at the construction site. It was grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, putting blocks, and bending rebar, all of that I had little to no working experience in.
I’ll admit that construction houses was not in my job description. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt more joyful, but because I was truly pleased. I recognized a gentle breeze that unexpectedly drifted across the scene and took my own thoughts withit. My mind started to wonder. Just how did I get here?
For many years that I had the dream of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing another culture. Wasn’t there something more to life than routine and monotony? Sometimes I’d often wonder if many people were really getting in the morning motivated by the job that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I had a change. I wanted to eventually become actively engaged in something positive that will provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that exist, and if yes where do I subscribe? Can one person really change the whole world? I wanted to find out.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and activity. Habitat simply started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and I had been the initial to go through the program. My official name was the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I believed this was an enormous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed on the aid of volunteers. Beginning I was somewhat on edge, in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying office work. I took part in the evolution of substances such as a volunteer manual, interview guides, and test forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous improvement of this IVP program. I even handled an onsite volunteer training plan in El Salvador. The best part in my job was really getting to work along with other volunteers, people who were there not because that they must function but have there been simply because they wanted to be.
As far as the volunteers had been concerned my job was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and support them throughout their stay. There is this kind of charisma amongst the volunteers I’d go on it a step further and plan weekend trips and after-work excursions. We wound up not simply changing the lifestyles of others, but changing the lives of one another.
As often as I could I would break away from the workplace and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of one’s work. Out at the sight we would work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was consistently very receptive, helpful, and appreciative of the help. The spectacle was a fantastic amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond which tied us together was the easy notion of developing a home. Only watching everyone else working, laughing, grinning, and sharing generated an atmosphere so rich with emotion that I made me reconsider the way I recognized riches. The home was emblematic of more than just a place of residence. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and an inherent comprehension of equality that we’ll carry together for the remainder of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was true. We’re not just building houses, but we were building lives.
Internationally or conflict settlement or human rights, the surroundings – it’s disheartening to believe that there are many ways to get involved and give back to the global community. However, these problems exist to not create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you start to begin making positive gifts just as long when you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this is among the toughest decisions to create. Can I eradicate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone cannot do away with poverty home, that directed me into this answer I was searching for. Perhaps one man can not change the entire world, however, the planet can definitely change for one individual. And it has this domino effect, that if spread across the planet we could, together, achieve the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the heat of mankind as an alternative of its own indifference.
