building your house on the lord – Unless the Lord Builds the House CBN.com
I used ton’t mind the heat so much, I was just glad to be outside. However, it did slow the rate of the progress at the construction site. It was grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, laying blocks, and bending rebar, most that I had little to no working experience in.
I will acknowledge that construction houses was not in my job description. A smile crossed my head, not because I felt much more joyful, however because I had been truly content. I recognized a gentle breeze that unexpectedly swept round the landscape and required my own thoughts with it. My mind began to wonder. How can I get here?
For several years I had the fantasy of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing another culture. Wasn’t there something more to life than routine and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if many people were really waking up in the morning motivated by the job that they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I needed a change. I desired to eventually become actively involved with something positive that could give me a feeling of purpose. Does that also exist, and if yes where can I register? Yet, I finally took the initiative and started to realize this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica in a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really change the whole world? I needed to learn.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat just started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long term volunteers and that I had been the 1st to go through the app. I felt this is an enormous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed on the aid of volunteers. Starting out I had been somewhat on edge, but in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – that I was actually enjoying office job. I took part in the growth of materials like an volunteer manual, interview guides, and test forms. I caused a taskforce for its continuous advancement of the IVP program. I even administered an onsite volunteer training regime at El Salvador. The best part about my job was to work along side other volunteers, people who were there not because they must function but were there only because they desired to become.
As far as the volunteers had been concerned, my job was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and support them throughout their stay. There is this type of charisma amongst the volunteers I’d often go on it a step further and plan weekend trips and after work excursions. We ended up not simply changing the lives of many others, however, shifting the lifestyles of each other.
As often as I could I’d break out from the office and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of one’s work. Out at the sight we would work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and appreciative of our help. The scene was a wonderful amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. Yet the frequent bond which tied us together was that the simple thought of developing a home. Only seeing every one working, laughing, grinning, and discussing generated a feeling therefore rich with emotion it made me rethink the way I defined wealth. Your house was symbolic of more than only a place of residence. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent comprehension of equality which we’ll carry together to the remainder of our lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was true. We were not only building houses, but we were building resides.
Internationally or conflict resolution or individual rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to think there are many methods of getting involved and give back to the global community. But these dilemmas exist not to create despair but activity. It doesn’t matter where you begin to get started making positive gifts just so long as you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this really is among the toughest decisions to produce. I chose the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I cannot do away with poverty home, that directed me to the answer I was looking for. Perhaps 1 person can’t change the planet, but the planet can surely change for a single person. And it has this domino effect, that if disperse throughout the globe we can, collectively, achieve the unthinkable and create a world that reflects the heat of humankind in the place of its own indifference.
