The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I was breaking out in a sweat when sitting in the shade. I used ton’t mind the heat, I was only happy to be outside. But it did slow the speed of our progress at the construction website. It was grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, laying blocks, and bending rebar, all that I had little to no working experience in.

I will acknowledge that building houses was perhaps not in my job description. A smile crossed my head, not because I felt much joyful, however because I had been truly pleased. I welcomed a gentle breeze which suddenly drifted round the landscape and required my thoughts withit. My mind started to wonder. How did I arrive here?

Are not there something more to life than routine and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if a lot of everyone was really getting at the morning inspired by the job that they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I had a switch. I needed to become consciously involved in something positive that will provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that also exist, and if yes where do I register? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Can one person really transform the whole world? I wanted to learn.

Habitat only started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long-term volunteers and I was the very first to go through the app. I believed this is an enormous opportunity since the company was constructed and existed on the support of volunteers. Beginning I had been somewhat on edge, in due time I found my groove within the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – I was actually enjoying office job. I participate in the creation of materials such as an volunteer manual, interview guides, and test forms. I worked with a task force for its continuous improvement of this IVP program. I administered an onsite volunteer training plan at El Salvador. Yet the greatest part about my job was having to work along with other volunteers, those who were there not because that they had to function but have there been only because they desired to be.

So far as the volunteers had been concerned, my role was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and support them throughout their stay. There was this type of charisma between the volunteers I’d often go on it a step further and plan weekend excursions and after-work excursions. We ended up not just changing the lives of many others, but shifting the lives of eachother. Working with Habitat gave me the confidence to feel I can accomplish some endeavor, however more importantly it gave me a more real sense of fulfillment in to be ready to work hard at work worth doing.

As often as I could I’d break away from the office and take volunteers build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see first hand the culmination of work. Out at the sight we would work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and appreciative of the help. The spectacle was a fantastic amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. Yet the frequent bond which tied us together was that the very simple notion of developing a home. Just seeing everybody else working, laughing, smiling, and sharing created an atmosphere so rich with emotion that it made me rethink how I recognized riches. Your home was symbolic greater than only a place of dwelling. It represented a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry together to the remainder of our lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was authentic. We were not just building houses, but we were building lives.

Internationally or domestically, conflict settlement or human rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to consider there are so many ways to get involved and give back to the international community. It doesn’t matter where you begin to begin making positive gifts equally so long when you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this really is among the toughest decisions to produce. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Can I eliminate poverty housing? Not even close. Did I succeed? Definitely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I can’t do away with poverty housing, which led me into this answer I was looking for. Perhaps one man can not change the entire world, however, the entire world can surely change for one individual. And it has this domino effect, which should disperse across the planet we could, together, reach the unthinkable and create a world that reflects the heat of mankind as an alternative of its indifference.
