The sun beat down from overhead with this kind of intensity I was breaking out in a sweat whilst sitting in the shade. I didn’t mind the heat, I was only happy to be out. Yet, it did impede the rate of our progress at the construction website.

I’ll admit that building houses was perhaps not in my own job description. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt much refreshed, but because I had been truly pleased. I recognized a gentle breeze that unexpectedly drifted round the scene and required my thoughts withit. My mind began to wonder. How did I arrive here?

Are not there something more to life than routine and monotony? Sometimes I would often wonder if many everyone was really waking up at the morning motivated by the work that they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I needed a change. I needed to eventually become consciously engaged with something positive which will provide me with a feeling of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where can I sign up? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. Yet, I finally chose and started to realize this fantasy when I traveled to Costa Rica in a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can one person really transform the world? I desired to learn.

Habitat simply started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long-term volunteers and that I was the 1st to go through the app. My official name was the Volunteer Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. I felt this was an enormous opportunity since the organization was built and existed the aid of volunteers. Starting out I had been somewhat on edge, in the time I found my groove over the Habitat frame. It was unbelievable – I was actually enjoying office job. I took part in the growth of substances like a volunteer manual, meeting guides, and evaluation forms. I caused a taskforce for its continuous improvement of the IVP program. I even administered an on site volunteer training regime at El Salvador. The best part about my job was really getting to work alongside other volunteers, those who were there not because they had to function but have there been simply because they wished to become.

So far as the volunteers had been concerned my role was to coordinate home and arrival logistics, then administer orientations, and encourage them through the duration of their stay. There was this kind of charisma between the volunteers I would take it a step farther and plan weekend excursions and after-work outings. We wound up not just changing the lives of many others, however, shifting the lifestyles of each other.

As often as I could I would break out from the workplace and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see first hand the culmination of work. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The spectacle was a great amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. The common bond which tied us together was the simple notion of building a home. Only seeing everyone working, laughing, grinning, and sharing generated an atmosphere so rich with emotion it made me reconsider how I defined wealth. Your home was emblematic greater than just a place of residence. It represented a unity, a coming together, along with an inherent comprehension of equality that we’ll carry together for the rest of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was authentic. We were not just building homes, we were building lives.

Internationally or conflict settlement or human rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to believe that there are many ways to get involved and give back to the international community. But these problems exist not to create despair but activity. It isn’t important where you begin to get started making positive contributions just so long when you make your decision to actually start somewhere. Eventually, this is among the toughest decisions to create. I chose the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eradicate poverty housing? Not really close. Did I succeed? Definitely! The calmness of my experience taught me that I cannot do away with poverty home, that directed me to this answer I was looking for. Perhaps 1 person can not change the entire world, but the world can surely change for one individual. And it has this domino effect, that if disperse throughout the planet we could, together, reach the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the warmth of mankind in the place of its indifference.
