The sun beat down from overhead with this kind of intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat whilst sitting in the colour. I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was only happy to be out. Yet, it did slow the rate of our progress at the construction site.
I’ll admit that building houses was not in my own job description. A grin crossed my head, not because I felt much more joyful, however because I had been truly content. I welcomed a gentle breeze that unexpectedly drifted across the landscape and took my thoughts withit. My mind began to wonder. How did I get here?
Wasn’t there something more alive than regular and monotony? At times I’d often wonder if most people were really waking at the morning inspired by the job they were doing and how their lifestyles were unfolding. I wanted a change. I needed to eventually become actively involved in something positive which will give me a feeling of purpose. Does that exist, and if so where can I register? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. However, I finally chose and started to see this fantasy once I traveled to Costa Rica in a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really transform the world? I wanted to find out.
Habitat just started a fresh International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long term volunteers and I was the very first to go through the program. I believed this is a tremendous opportunity since the organization was constructed and existed on the support of volunteers. Getting started I had been somewhat on edge, in the time I found my groove within the Habitat frame. It was incredible – that I was actually enjoying office work. I participate in the development of materials like a volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous improvement of this IVP program. I handled an on-site volunteer training regime at El Salvador. The greatest part in my job was getting to work along side other volunteers, people who were there not because they must function but were there simply because they wished to become.
So far as the volunteers had been concerned my job was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and support them during their stay. There is this type of charisma amongst the volunteers I would often go on it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after-work excursions. We ended up not simply changing the lifestyles of others, however, changing the lives of eachother.
Normally as I could I would break away from the workplace and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see firsthand the culmination of your job. Out at the sight we’d work alongside the benefiting Habitat family that was always very open-minded, friendly, and appreciative of the help. The scene was a great amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and faith. The frequent bond that tied us together was the very simple thought of building a home. Only seeing everyone working, laughing, smiling, and discussing created a feeling therefore rich with emotion that it made me reconsider the way I defined wealth. Your house was emblematic of more than just a place of residence. It represented a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry with us to the rest of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it was authentic. We’re not only building houses, but we were building lives.
Internationally or conflict settlement or individual rights, the surroundings – it’s disheartening to consider that there are many ways to get involved and give back to the international community. It doesn’t matter where you begin to start making positive gifts equally for as long as you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this is among the toughest decisions to create. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Not even close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone cannot get rid of poverty housing, which directed me into the answer I was looking for. Perhaps 1 man can not change the planet, however, the world can definitely change for a single person. And it’s this domino effect, which should spread across the planet we could, collectively, reach the unimaginable and create a world that reflects the heat of humanity in the place of its indifference.
