The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I was breaking out in a sweat while sitting in the shade. I used ton’t mind the heat so much, I was simply happy to be out. However, it did impede the rate of the progress at the construction website.
I will acknowledge that construction houses was not in my own job description. As I sat there with my back against a tree I poured a half jar of water on my head. A smile crossed my head, not because I felt more refreshed, however because I had been truly satisfied. I welcomed a gentle breeze that suddenly drifted round the landscape and took my thoughts withit. My mind started to wonder. Just how did I arrive here?
For several years I had the dream of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing another culture. Wasn’t there something more to life than regular and monotony? Sometimes I’d often wonder if a lot of people were really getting at the morning motivated by the job they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I had a switch. I wanted to become consciously involved with something positive that will give me a feeling of purpose. Does that even exist, and if yes where can I register? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. But, I finally took the initiative and began to see this dream when I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really change the whole world? I wanted to discover.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and actions. Habitat simply started a brand new International Volunteer Program (IVP) to get long-term volunteers and I had been the very first to experience the app. I believed this was a tremendous opportunity since the company was built and existed on the support of volunteers. Starting out I had been a bit on edge, but in the time I found my groove over the Habitat framework. It was unbelievable – I was actually enjoying off ice job. I participate in the evolution of substances such as a volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a taskforce for its continuous advancement of the IVP program. I even handled an on site volunteer training program in El Salvador. Yet the best part about my job was getting to work along side other volunteers, people who were there not because that they had to function but have there been simply because they wished to be.
So far as the volunteers had been concerned, my job was to coordinate housing and coming logistics, then administer orientations, and support them throughout their stay. There was this type of charm between the volunteers I’d go on it a step further and plan weekend trips and after-work outings. We finished up not simply altering the lives of many others, but shifting the lifestyles of one another.
Normally as I could I would break out from the office and take volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights during Costa Rica. It was heart warming to see first hand the culmination of job. Out at the sight we would work alongside the benefiting Habitat family who was consistently very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of our help. The spectacle was a amazing amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and faith. The frequent bond which tied us together wasn’t that the easy thought of developing a home. Just seeing every one working, laughing, smiling, and discussing generated an atmosphere so rich with emotion that I made me rethink the way I defined riches. Your home was emblematic greater than only a place of residence. It symbolized a unity, a coming together, and also an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry with us for the rest of our lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been authentic. We’re not only building houses, but we were building lives.
Internationally or conflict settlement or human rights, the surroundings – it’s disheartening to consider there are many ways to get involved and give back to the global community. It doesn’t matter where you begin to begin making positive gifts just as long as you make the choice to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this really is among the toughest decisions to make. Can I eradicate poverty housing? Not even close. Did I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I alone cannot eliminate poverty housing, that led me to the answer I was searching for. Perhaps one man can not change the entire world, however, the entire world can definitely change for a single person. And it’s this domino effect, that if spread across the planet we could, collectively, achieve the unthinkable and make a world that reflects the heat of humanity in the place of its indifference.
