I didn’t mind the heat so much, I was simply happy to be out. But it did impede the speed of the progress at the construction website. It was grinding work between digging, mixing concrete, laying blocks, and bending rebar, all that I had little to no working experience in.
I’ll admit that building houses was not in my own job description. A grin crossed my face, not because I felt much more refreshed, however because I had been truly content. I recognized a gentle breeze which suddenly drifted round the scene and required my own thoughts withit. My mind began to wonder. How can I get here?
Wasn’t there something more your than routine and monotony? Sometimes I’d often wonder if most everyone was really getting up at the morning motivated by the work they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I wanted a switch. I desired to become actively engaged with something positive that will give me a sense of purpose. Does that also exist, and if yes where do I register? Can anyone really transform the world? I needed to find out.
Habitat only started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long term volunteers and I was the 1st to experience the application. I believed that this is an enormous opportunity since the company was built and existed on the aid of volunteers. Starting out I was a bit on edge, in the time I found my groove over the Habitat frame. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying office job. I took part in the creation of substances such as an volunteer manual, interview guides, and evaluation forms. I worked with a taskforce for the continuous advancement of the IVP program. I even administered an on-site volunteer training plan in El Salvador. The best part about my job was really getting to work along side other volunteers, those who were there not because they must function but have there been only because they desired to become.
So far as the volunteers were concerned my job was to coordinate housing and arrival logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them throughout their stay. There is such a charm amongst the volunteers I would simply take it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after work outings. We ended up not simply altering the lives of many others, but shifting the lifestyles of eachother. Working together with Habitat gave me the confidence to feel I could accomplish virtually any task, but more importantly it gave me a more genuine sense of fulfillment in being ready to work hard at work worth doing.
Normally as I could I would break out from the office and take volunteers build trips to Habitat construction sights throughout Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of your job. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family who was always very open-minded, friendly, and respectful of the help. The scene was a fantastic amalgamation of cultures, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. Yet the frequent bond which tied us together wasn’t that the easy thought of building a home. Only seeing everybody else working, laughing, grinning, and sharing created a feeling so rich with emotion that it made me rethink how I defined wealth. Your house was symbolic of more than only a place of dwelling. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, along with an inherent understanding of equality which we’ll carry together for the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it might sound, it had been true. We’re not just building houses, but we were building lives.
Internationally or domestically, conflict settlement or human rights, poverty or the surroundings – it’s disheartening to believe there are so many ways to get involved and give back to the international community. It isn’t important where you begin to get started making positive gifts equally for as long when you make your decision to actually start somewhere. Fundamentally, this is among the toughest decisions to create. I decided the movement of eliminating poverty housing. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Maybe not even close. Can I succeed? Absolutely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot do away with poverty housing, that directed me to this answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 man can not change the entire world, but the entire world can definitely change for a single individual. And it’s this domino effect, which should disperse across the globe we can, together, achieve the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the heat of humankind as an alternative of its own indifference.
