The sun beat down from overhead with such intensity I had been breaking out in a sweat while sitting in the shade. I used ton’t mind the heat so much, I was simply happy to be out. But, it did impede the speed of our progress at the construction website. It had been grinding job between digging, mixing concrete, putting blocks, and bending rebar, all which I had little to no practical knowledge in.
I’ll admit that construction houses was not in my job description. A smile crossed my face, not because I felt joyful, however because I had been truly happy. I welcomed a gentle breeze which suddenly swept round the scene and took my own thoughts with it. My mind started to wonder. Just how did I get here?
For several years that I had the dream of living abroad, learning a new language and experiencing another culture. Are not there something more your than routine and monotony? Occasionally I would often wonder if many everyone was really getting up at the morning motivated by the work they were doing and how their lives were unfolding. I needed a change. I wanted to eventually become actively engaged in something positive which would give me a sense of purpose. Does that even exist, and if so where can I subscribe? Perhaps it’s easier said than done. However, I finally chose and started to realize this dream once I traveled to Costa Rica on a whim and found myself volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. Can anyone really change the world? I wanted to discover.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat just started a new International Volunteer Program (IVP) for long term volunteers and that I was the very first to experience the application. I believed this is an enormous opportunity since the company was built and existed the support of volunteers. Getting started I was a bit on edge, in the time I found my groove over the Habitat frame. It was incredible – I was actually enjoying off ice job. I took part in the creation of materials such as a volunteer manual, meeting guides, and test forms. I worked with a task force for its continuous advancement of this IVP program. I administered an on site volunteer training regime in El Salvador. The greatest part in my job was to work alongside other volunteers, those who were there not because they must be but have there been only because they wanted to become.
As far as the volunteers were concerned, my job was to coordinate home and coming logistics, administer orientations, and encourage them through the duration of their stay. There was this type of charm amongst the volunteers I’d simply take it a step farther and plan weekend trips and after work outings. We finished up not simply altering the lives of many others, however, changing the lives of eachother. Dealing with Habitat gave me the confidence to feel I can accomplish any job, but more importantly it gave me a real sense of fulfillment in to be able to perform hard at work worth doing.
As often as I could I would break out from the office and accept volunteers on build trips to Habitat construction sights during Costa Rica. It was heartwarming to see first hand the culmination of one’s job. Out at the sight we’d work together with the benefitting Habitat family that was always very receptive, helpful, and appreciative of our help. The spectacle was a amazing amalgamation of civilizations, economic backgrounds, and beliefs. The frequent bond that tied us together wasn’t the easy notion of building a home. Just watching everyone else working, laughing, grinning, and sharing created an atmosphere so rich with emotion that I made me reconsider how I defined riches. Your home was emblematic of more than only a place of dwelling. It symbolized a motto, a coming together, and an inherent understanding of equality that we’ll carry with us for the rest of our own lives. As cliché as it may sound, it was true. We were not only building homes, we were building resides.
Internationally or domestically, conflict resolution or individual rights, poverty or the environment – it’s disheartening to think there are so many ways of getting involved and give back to the international community. It doesn’t matter where you start to get started making positive contributions equally for as long as you make the decision to actually start somewhere. Ultimately, this is one of the toughest decisions to create. Did I eliminate poverty housing? Not really close. Can I succeed? Definitely! The serenity of my experience taught me that I cannot get rid of poverty housing, which directed me to the answer I was searching for. Perhaps 1 person can’t change the planet, but the world can surely change for one person. And it has this domino effect, which should spread across the globe we can, together, achieve the unimaginable and make a world that reflects the heat of humanity as an alternative of its indifference.
